Please vote once for how you think the series should end (picking an answer that starts “Dexter should”) and once for how you think the series will end (picking an answer that starts “Dexter will”). So one is your preference, the other is your guess as to what the writers will do.
I have purposely left out the “cancelled without resolution” option.
Killed is pretty obvious (he may or may not be caught in the process - obviously it’s important, but I didn’t want too many options).
‘Revealed’ means he is found out, maybe just by Deb or Astor or someone (other murderers don’t really count) or maybe he goes to jail.
‘Saved’ means he sheds the dark passenger, without having been revealed to anyone.
I selected “should be killed” and “will be revealed.” I figure with his lifestyle and how much luck he’s had, he should die one day due to bad luck or the circumstances not lining up nicely. However, I believe the series finale will have him be outted as a serial killer by Deb but continues to have his dark passenger.
I’d like to see him get revealed. Have about a fourth to a third of a season leading up to him being found out then about half the season with the cops chasing him and the rest with him on trial.
I definitely think he’ll be revealed in some form - to Deb in particular - but I doubt they’ll go the trial route. I think the most likely ending is that Deb and possibly other members of the Miami Metro find him out, but don’t turn him in, and he’s redeemed as a person… somehow.
I think he should actually be caught though. I mean, his body count is huge, and he’s being less and less careful with every passing year. It’s like the serial killer who wants to be caught.
The writers on this show are able to surprise me often enough that I’m not very sure of how they’ll end it. It feels like they’re setting Dexter up to be saved. He’s been growing as a person, developing real relationships and emotions for other people. The natural progression of the path he’s on is that he’ll get rid of the dark passenger and be more ‘normal.’
I think it would be more realistic, though, if he is found out and either killed or put in prison. That would be a pretty miserable way for the series to end, so I’m thinking they should have someone (most likely Deb) find out about him and come to terms with it.
