God chose them to show us the way. By example, by following His Commandments and expressing the love for the stranger as we all should love our neighbors. It is spelled out in scripture, all you have to do is read it and do it and then it will be done.

(Lev 19:34 KJV) But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God

They were chosen to show us the way, to show us how to treat the stranger, how to be compassionate and loving to your neighbor and by doing so peace would envelope the world.

I’m not sure what confuses you. I mean, the passage says why Israel was chosen. Quoting the King James Version, since that’s what you’re using:

The first passage says, “God chose Jews because they are awesome”

The second says, “It definitely wasn’t because there are a bunch of Jews. In fact there aren’t many at all”

I think it’s saying that they’re awesome because God chose them, not the other way around. That in fact God chose to sanctify a tiny tribe of nobodies so what they had they’d owe to God.

I think you’re just mis-parsing it. The statement isn’t “The Lord didn’t choose you”; the statement is “The Lord didn’t choose you because you were more in number than any people”. AKA, “the Lord didn’t choose you because there’s a lot of you, he chose you for a different reason”.

I’m not certain if there was one single reason why the Jews were chosen, as opposed to some other group.

However, if there was a single reason, it was the fact that Abraham and Sarah believed God completely.

Hebrews 11:8-12:
8. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
