09/28/24 SNL Cold Open

A lot has gone down since SNL was last live. Pretty sure tonight’s cold open will somehow involve Trump. What will it be? Ear diaper? Haitian restaurant? Cheap watches?

I was just wondering what will happen when Lorne passes, especially if its say an early Saturday.
Would they put on a repeat, do a retrospective?

Since there may not be another debate between Trump and Harris, they have to strike while the iron is hot-ish if they want to kick things off with a presidential debate sketch. And they love them a good presidential debate sketch.

They have Maya Rudolph all warmed up and ready to be Kamala, so why wouldn’t they use her in the opening sketch. I’m wondering if they’ll be able to have Keenan appear as New York Mayor Adams and NC Lt. Gov. Robinson in the same sketch.

Maybe they’ll have Maya as Oprah interviewing the real Harris is a surprise appearance.

Let us know, cause some of us are about to sleep.

Ok, taking the bullet proof glass away was funny.

Jim Gaffigan as Tim Walz was kinda genius. I hope he makes more appearances as Coach.

Yea, I had a good hearty laugh at that and also later at the ‘candy slave’ knockoff Oompa Loompa costume in the Spirit Halloween ad.

I think this is best political cold open they’ve done in awhile. Of course they had time to prepare and 3 months of material. Got to give Dana Carvey his props. He nailed Biden’s posture, walk and speech patterns. Also Doug saying what I’ve been saying all along “I can’t wait to decorate the White House for Christmas. The theme will be Hannukah”. Also rolling away the bulletproof glass when Vance gets up to speak. Really on point impressions and some good writing. The rest of the show was OK. Can’t hate on Jean Smart, but the open was the highlight.

Yes the open was the highlight and all the surprise guests were excellent.

The rest was not so good in my opinion and I say that as someone who has enjoyed the last few seasons. Jean Smart was completely wasted.

The only part other than the cold open that I enjoyed was Bowen Yang as Moo Ping the baby hippo from a Thailand zoo who has gone viral. His weird characters that show up on Weekend Update are a riot.

Off the top of my head, I believe the three sketches I most enjoyed last season all featured Chloe Troast, which means — I’m not sure what it means? But it’d probably mean something, if I were to try to evaluate this episode.

Weekend Update had good lines and no real clunkers. @psychobunny nailed all the funny stuff from the cold open. Other than that, the sketches were at best meh. I was surprised that they didn’t pull out some good new stuff for the 50th season opener instead of well-trodden bits. Liked Jelly Roll’s “Liar”. Always had a thing for big groups with sonic layers. He’s considered country, but label him rock and I wouldn’t blink an eye.

It was about 3 minutes too long.
