10/05/2024 SNL S50 EP2 Nate Bergatze/Coldplay

So is anyone else watching tonight?

The cold open was pretty funny. Happy to see Gaffigan still doing Walz, Carvey as Biden and Samberg as Doug Emhoff. And of course Maya Rudolph as Kamala.

Nate Bergatze’s opening monologue is much better than Jean Smart was on the season opener, but he’s a stand up and she isn’t so probably not a fair comparison.

The golf and water slide sketches were reasonably amusing.

Brian

I’m enjoying this a good deal more than the season opener.

Bergatze is much funnier and I thought the golf sketch was pretty good.

And I’m enjoying Coldplay’s first song.

Jane Wickline singing on Update I kind of loved.

Holy shit.

SUSHI GLORY HOLE

Search those words in that order when you get up on Sunday.

That’s all I have to say.

Yeah, I was laughing out loud when I saw that! Leave it to the Lonely Island guys to outdo themselves.

Just like last time Bergatze hosted, the skits were more inventive, better written, and farther out than the usual lazy bits. They should make him permanent host.

The latin elements added to Coldeplay’s second song made it almost as good as Jelly Roll’s “Liar” and that’s a high bar.

Sushi Glory Hole. Leaving now.

The George Washington crossing the Delaware River sketch sounded familiar. I think they did something similar when he last hosted. (Though I wonder if that originates from his stand-up act.)

George Washington at Valley Forge. Same premise. One of the best skits in years. This was as much weaker as sequels usually are, but still better than whatever they did last week.

Yes, this overall was much better than what they did last week.

Moo Deng on Update will live on as the best thing about the season opener. And the cold open. This week was overall pretty solid.

Sorry the Sushi Glory Hole seems to have been too much for you. I was howling with laughter at the insanity of it.

The Sushi bit and the Michael Che bit in response to Margarine Traitor Greene were the only parts that I thought were hilarious. The monologue was meh.

The “Sábado Gigante” sketch felt like a less violent version of the “Japanese Game Show” sketch from 30 years ago.

Well, yes. But how many people watching were alive to see that 30 years ago? I was, but still.

Probably everybody in this thread.

As well as Randy Johnson killing a bird (pitching, not golfing)

You are correct. The original was such a classic, I wasn’t surprised to see them try to repeat it; and it was much weaker but still amusing.

Since many of the better sketches have been mentioned (and there were many that really hit the mark), two that didn’t work (IMO) were:

New cast member Jane Wickline’s interminable song during Weekend Update. It was 3 1/2 minutes and seemed like it would never end.

And the Mile High Burger Challenge was just awful. Using a family meeting about old Dad’s dementia as the basis of a sketch? Bad bad bad.

We turned it off at that point, so we missed the Sushi Glory Hole sketch, but I just tried to watch it and got about a minute before I clicked out. Sketches done for shock value alone don’t make it for me.

I’ll admit it. I’ve always sort of liked Coldplay. Their first song was dullsville, but the second was much more interesting.

She’s been in two sketches as an actor and nobody has ever appeared more wooden. I know she supposedly has some sketch background, but she’s mostly a Tik-Tok star whose mother was a personal assistant to Lorne Michaels. I hope that’s not the only reason she was hired and I hope she grows and gets more comfortable over the season.
