I don’t understand this. OU beat Mizzou by 10 at Norman. The game was actually closer than that. Is that “handily”? Why would it be easier for them to beat Mizzou in San Antonio? They also beat Texas Tech (who beat OU) and Texas A&M (who beat Texas).
Not saying OU won’t be favored or that they won’t win, I’m just not sure why everyone seems to think it’s obvious. Have you seen Mizzou play this year? They’re pretty damn good.
MOUNTAINEERS!!
And I think Mizzou looked pretty good againt KU tonight. If (knock on wood) WVU makes it into the title game, I’d prefer to go up againt Ohio State then MU. I like the way West Virginia matches up against the Buckeyes on both sides of the ball, and I honestly think we’d have a harder tiem against Missouri. Besides, a WVU-OSU game would be pretty interesting here in Ohio.
So I guess I’ll be cheering for the Sooners next week, just as vigorously as I cheered against them last week. And, as always (and forever)… BEAT PITT!
As long as we win, I don’t really care, but I would hate to hear Herbstreit and the like complaining for the next month about “WVU and MISSOU?!?” in the national title game, blah, blah, blah.
As far as the 84 BYU team, I don’t think they were the best team in the country, but a few voters did because they were voted #1 in both polls. It’s a good example of the progress the system has made since then.
Could you imagine this year that Hawaii plays in the Grape Bowl on Dec 22, destroys a chump team and gets crowned the national champs? There would be riots, but that happened with BYU in '84 and there was only minor grumbling…
Just FYI… The polls are out, and while the misguided AP only has WVU at #2, the Coaches poll (the one of those that actually matters) has us at #1. It’ll make it interesting to see how the BCS standings fall out.
I never thought I’d see it, but here we are on top. Let me type it out one more time to soak in the feeling.
Yes, and I am encouraged by the fact that OSU is a distant third in both polls. Regardless of what the talking heads said, I was afraid that the voters would push them close to try to get us out of the game.
It won’t happen. If we beat Pitt, we are playing for the NC for the first time ever (and don’t tell me we did in '88 or '93 because we didn’t)!!!
I’m actually hoping that Oklahoma pounds on Mizzou again in the Big 12 championship game. That leaves the national title being fought by OSU and WVU. But I’m unabashedly an OSU fan.
Question- why is Hawaii not a contender for the national championship?
Because the sportswriters and coaches who haven’t been right yet this season don’t think they’re good enough. Don’t THINK they’re good enough!!! They don’t know, and are guessing once again. They’re PROBABLY right, but who really knows? How can we say with any certainty that West Virginia or Ohio State is better than Hawaii?
With the mess we’ve got, it makes no sense to try to pick two teams as the ones worthy of playing for the title. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either a lunatic or a fan of one of the teams that gets selected.
The current system is a farce, no better than the one it replaced. I realize that the bowl system, stupid and archaic as it is, won’t be going away in my lifetime, and that I’ll never see the playoff that’s obviously needed. I’m just venting.
Do you think it might have something to do with the fact that they played Charleston Southern, Northern Colorado and UNLV as their non-conference opponents, and only won over in-conference Louisiana Tech by a single point? That the conference they play in has only one other team in the top-25, and that’s mostly a result of last year, rather than anything Boise St. has really done this year? That Boise St. lost to Washington this year 24-10, in what is a down year for Washington, and thus it is hard to think of Hawaii really having a good chance against a much better team than that?
Likely, Washington will take care of the issue next week, putting doubts to rest. If they don’t, likely Hawaii will go to the Sugar Bowl, and lose to LSU, making their inferiority patently obvious. Of course, many said that about Boise St. last year.
