#1 LSU loses, there is joy in Morgantown

Can WVU play for the national title now if they win out??? Wow!!!

CAN they? Sure.

But this whole season proves once again that a playoff is needed. How can ANYONE look at the mess the writers and coaches have made of their votes week in and week out and conclude that letting them vote is the best way to determine a champion?

It’s NOT that the writers and coaches are stupid or dishonest (though it’s a badly kept secret that most coaches could never be bothered filling out their own ballots and invariably left that task to lower level flunkies or secretaries). It’s that they just don’t KNOW who the best teams are, and are reduced to guessing (just as you or I would be in their shoes).

And the mess isn’t over- IO happen to think Missouri will kill Kansas and that Oklahoma will kill Missouri. What then?

If the BCS put West Virginia and Ohio State in the finals, would ANYONE really believe that was a genuine championship game?

If Kansas loses, the only remaining unbeaten will be Hawaii. Aloha, BCS!

At this point, I don’t much care who plays for the championship. I’m just glad that weak-tit operation LSU is out of it. They should have 4 losses by now, those lucky bastards!

I still say USC is one of the top 3 teams. Ranking be damned! Didja see them roll on ASU?

I’m tickled to see LSU lose. As a Big Ten fan, I thought it was ridiculous that the Illinois loss “eliminated” Ohio State while LSU was able to be #1 with one loss. Now if West Virginia (another perpetually overranked team) stumbles OR the Missouri-Kansas winner gets upset in the Big 12 final, OSU could well be in the title game again. The only thing that keeps me from rooting for this more would be that the Rose Bowl might not pick a Big Ten team to replace OSU. It was bad enough that Texas polluted our bowl for two years, if they took an SEC team it would be even worse.

ahem…

When USC is on… they are VERY good. When they’re not, well, they’re still pretty good. This team has been more inconsistent than the teams of the past few years and they’re paying the price. I don’t think they have a chance at making the National Championship Game though.

Such a wierd CFB season this year. I have no idea what to make of it. No team has made any sort of case for being the best team, let alone 3 or 4 teams like years past. So, to me… anybody who can make it into the top two, god bless them.

It is like this every year. The #1 crime in all of college football, ESPECIALLY if you have title hopes… is losing late in the year. It is infinitely worse than losing in September or October.

Just another wierd quirk of the lame ranking system that they use.

Why not? The rules that all NCAA Div I-A teams agreed to at the beginning of the season would have been followed to create the game.

But, I am also in favor of a playoff system, however playoffs don’t always give you the “best” team as the champion either. Does anyone think the 2005 Steelers were better than the Colts that year?

This year, more than any other, shows that there are probably 7-8 teams that have a legitimate claim at being the best, and a playoff, while exciting, would only show which team was better on that day, or got a lucky bounce on that day.

Are you saying that is OSU beats WVU on Jan. 7, that they should have an asterisk next to their championship that reads:

  • not really champion because of stupid BCS

??

Say, isn’t there an SEC team that beat LSU in 3 OT’s this year AND beat Arkansas?

I’m pretty sure there is.

There’s joy in Dayton, Ohio, too…because that’s where this house full of Mountaineer fans went crazy cheering on the Hogs last night.

You gotta like our chances. Not that upsets can’t happen, especially this year. But the only team that can beat us in our last two games is ourselves. We’ve got no excuse for not playing our best…there should be sufficient motivation now.

LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!

Word, aerodave! (Another ex-pat Mountaineer here.)

Yeah, I hear ya. I’m just hoping for the Rose Bowl*, but I would want to whip up on Ohio State, instead of some other, less deserving operation.

*Which means I might have to actually root for FUCLA today

You mean the one currently being thrashed by Tennessee?

And then again… :o

Thanks a lot for that. I went to the NCAA hoops tournament opening round in 2005 in Cleveland when WV won, and that chant was still ringing in my ears up until just last week.

WVU 66, UCONN 21…

One more game and we play for the title!!!

Let’s GOOOOOOOOOOOOO…

It looks like they’ll be playing Missouri.

Did ANYONE have that title game?

Mizzou is going to lose to Oklahoma, which will set up an Ohio State - WVU final.

Do you really believe Brigham Young was the best team in the country the year they won the national title?

The current system is idiotic, and relies almost purely on OPINION! I don’t give a rat’s ass whether sportswriters THINK, based on a few exhibition games, that West Virginia is better than, say Missouri. I want to see the teams play each other. If the end result is a BUNCH of good 1 and/or two loss teams, I won’t take the eventual “champion” seriously.

And I think your example of the Steelers is misguided. The Steelers got off to a poor start in their Super Bowl season, but remember, they were almost EXACTLY the same team that had gone 15-1 the previous season. Once they got healthy, they PLAYED like the team everyone had expected to see all season.

So, yes- I’ll say the Steelers were very bit as good as the Colts that season.
