10-10 Numbers

What’s with 10-10 numbers? How do they work? Why did they go from 10-something to 10-10-something? Anybody have any idea?

“Faith is not belief without reason, but trust without reservation.”

They were 1-0 numbers. After the break up of AT&T it was decided that all LD companies should have equal access on all lines. The most common were 10333 (sprint) 10222(MCI) and 10ATT(AT&T) so that no matter what company you signed with you could always use someone else’s company as well. Thus equal access.

When LD exploded they expanded to 1010 from 10 to accommodate the greater number of LD companies

I think this was covered a while back, but i’m on a really slow machine and it’d take forever to search. Anyway, IIRC, there were a good few responses from insiders ie folk working in the industry so you should look it up.

Yeah, I’m the telecom drone who posted an explanation of “soft picking” and stuff. I just ran an archive search, but I can’t seem to find that old thread, from maybe a year ago. If nobody else can come up with it, I’ll post a repeat explanation. I’d do it now, but dinner calls.
