No. I need money to live; I don’t need God to live. I could try living without any money and make my life more difficult than I want it to be, or I could go away and try to join a culture that doesn’t have money (I’d need money to get there), but those do represent major hardships and sound unpleasant. The no-God thing has been working great for me, though.
Maybe if you have a serious addiction. Otherwise, no.
What about people who think God takes our minds off what’s actually important in the long run- stuff like not lying and cheating and murdering each other?
If those rules predate him and don’t have much to do with him in the first place, I don’t think you can say the mess has much to do with ignoring God.
Maybe you don’t think so, but I think you’re wrong about that.
Eh. I think you can make a solid case that the general version of what most people mean when they talk about those Commandments is more “official” than what’s in the Bible.
These problems and adversities that we (humanity) wouldn’t ever have faced if only we had adhered to the Ten Commandments are part of the very fabric of the human condition; part of what it means to be human.
No, no, and no. None of those things are god. Yes, there are people who are obsessed with getting one or all of those things, but that does not make money or drugs or sex a god.
And even though YOU might think that your god is important in the long run, many people do not. Nor will they think that your god is important, no matter how much you keep repeating yourself.
I have not preached at ANY of you!! Or tried to convince you of any religious belief, have I?
I thought with this being an intellectual forum, one could expect inetllectlual discourse on any topic. You have all proved me wrong, and I see that an Opposition to the Word is prevalent. I have not espoused any religion, or belief system. You have all proven that you are resistant to any moral suggestions. My initial query was: Would the world be a better place if Humanity would have followd the 10 commandments in the thousands of years of human history? Actually you have proved the answer. Thank you.
I didn’t quote or misquote anyone! Your premise states, and I quote it verbatim:
And that is particularly stupid and false. I tried gentle satire twice with you, but that didn’t work, so I’m forced into blunt and straightforward little words.
That particular set of rules has too much extraneous stuff that wouldn’t make a whit of a difference in how the world turns out.
I’m pretty sure that the ethics of reciprocity would suffice just fine and the world would probably be a better place if everyone practiced it. It also doesn’t require any religious story to back it up and is a lot easier to remember than 10 (or 613) commandments, some of which are downright silly. I’ve got a killer recipe for beef stroganoff and think the world is a better place because of it, not in spite of it.
You know…I don’t care. What you and ‘them’ don’t know is that 'GOD’is everywhere and aware of every thing. I’m sure you do not believe this…but do you Really??? Are you sure there is not A Supreme being recording everything???
You are me old duck, with all the religious statements you’re making.
Since you’ve told us that “HE” is watching everything, “GOD” doesn’t want us to make idols, etc. etc, but also that “this is not about religion or christian values”, strikes me that you’re kicking down the back door of the false witness commandment.
Can’t speak for Lynn, but I’m pretty damn sure it’s a load of old nonsense.
