PlayStation Greatest Hits Demo Disc contains five games. Gran Turismo 2 is one, Final Fantasy Tactics is another, and the others are unmemorable.
These games have been out for a couple years. Since a current PS2 demo disc sells for about $5, you’d think this antique PSone demo disc would sell for less, right? Wrong. My local Best Buy is selling it for [dr. evil]one HUNDRED dollars.[/dr. evil]
I thought it was a misprint, but their computers confirmed the price.
I thought someone accidentally typed the wrong price, and his mistake was somehow overlooked by everyone involved in the chain between entering the price into the inventory system and placing the plastic price cards on the shelf… but aren’t the prices centralized? Don’t they come from Best Buy HQ, like a papal edict?
I thought maybe it was just supply & demand - maybe everyone wants this demo disc for some reason (comes with nekkid pics of Janet Reno?) and it sells out so fast they can’t keep it on the shelves. But 1) they had two whole stacks of the discs, and 2) it’s the year 2002, who really wants a demo of Gran Turismo 2?
Then I thought, maybe Best Buy has a contract with Sony where they’re obligated to offer the demo disc for sale, but Best Buy doesn’t really want to sell them for some reason. That sounds plausible, at least, but I don’t know why such a contract would lead to the demo disc selling for $100.
So what is it: innocent mistake, diamond in the rough, or fiendish plot?
