100 Wonders to see before you die. How many have you seen?

  1. Pyramids of Egypt; 2. Great Wall of China; 6. Grand Canyon; 15. Victoria Falls; 16. Forbidden City; 27. Petra; 34. Egyptian Museum; 37. Hong Kong; 39. Burj Khalifa; 41. Louvre Museum; 43. Versailles; 44. Carlsbad Caverns; 50. Hagia Sofia; 63. Golden Pavilion; 73. Sahara Desert; 77. Topkapi Palace; 81. Yellowstone; 84. New York Skyline; 86. Eiffel Tower; 89. British Museum; 90. Burj al Arab; 92. Yosemite; 96. Lijiang/Shangri-la; 99. San Francisco.

That’s 24.

ETA:

Only two for Lijiang so far.

5

Grand Canyon
Yellowstone
New York
Eiffel Tower
Neuschwanstein

Oh, I missed that on the list the first time. Cool, I’m up to nine now.

I’ve only seen 5 of those in person. But thanks to the wonders of technology, I’ve seen most of them in photos & video.

Hehe, yes; when I visited the Taj Mahal, the thought that kept running through my mind was “Oh, dammit, this looks exactly like all the photos. What am I actually getting out of this?”. I am a terribly unappreciative tourist…

20–

Pompeii
Stonehenge
Colosseum of Rome
Yellowstone NP
Chartres Cathedral
St Peter’s Basilica
New York Skyline
Uffizi Gallery
Eiffel Tower
Sistine Chapel
British Museum
Louvre Museum
Canals of Venice
St Mark’s Basilica
Versailles
Florence Cityscape
Acropolis
Neuschwanstein
Leaning Tower Pisa
San Francisco

Some of these are really duplicates. Like, who visits Florence, but doesn’t go to the Uffuzi? Or you go to Venice but skip St Mark’s?

Go on any canned “If it’s Tuesday this must be Paris” tour and you can hit more than a dozen of these.

Plus, what makes the Fjords of Norway so great? I’ve been through SE Alaska several times, so if it’s just seeing fjords and glaciers I’ve got that covered.

Others are pretty lame. The Leaning Tower of Pisa? The Eiffel Tower? Neushchwanstein? Those shouldn’t be in a list of top 100 things to see before you die.

  1. But that’s not what’s interesting to me…what’s interesting is how many Dopers have been to the city where I work. It certainly is a wonder; we often ask ourselves, “I wonder when they are going to fix the potholes?” or “I wonder when the next local politician is going to be arrested?” Life in Da Falls: serious business.

I’m planning to see Hagia Sofia in the next year or two, and some of the US stuff too.

74
Leaning Tower Pisa
99
San Francisco

19, apparently.

Eight.

Grand Canyon
Machu Picchu
Alhambra
Louvre Museum
Prague Old Town
New York Skyline
Eiffel Tower
Banff National Park

Not too bad for a hillbilly.

And I disagree with the list.

It certainly doesn’t seem particularly well thought out. My total shot up thanks to a one week tour of Egypt. (Who goes on a Nile Cruise and doesn’t go to Karnak??)

And I’m miffed that I haven’t been to the Serengeti or the Ngorogoro crater, but have been to the Masai Mara, and that’s not on the list.

Total: 14

Pyramids of Egypt
Machu Picchu
Karnak
Teotihuacan
Chichen Itza
Nile River Cruise
Egyptian Museum
Valley of the Kings
Pompeii
St Basil’s Cathedral
Abu Simbel
Kremlin
New York Skyline
British Museum

Fourteen. And count me as another one that’s not overly impressed with the list. Some of the things on there that I’ve seen aren’t nearly as exciting as things I’ve seen that aren’t on the list.

6 Grand Canyon
12 Ngorongoro Crater
22 Acropolis
41 Louvre Museum
44 Carlsbad Caverns
79 Stonehenge
81 Yellowstone NP
84 New York Skyline
86 Eiffel Tower
88 Niagara Falls
92 Yosemite NP
97 Neuschwanstein
98 Banff NP
99 San Francisco

Just San Francisco. Which was nice and all, but nothing I’d consider a wonder of the world. Of course, on his top 51 in the US list, he has a listing for both San Francisco and San Francisco cable cars.

Speaking of the fjords of Norway

I have been to 9 so far, and I always thought I was pretty well travelled.

Grand Canyon
Alhambra
Metropolitan Museum
Prague Old Town
Yellowstone
NYC
Yosemite
San Francisco
Neuschwanstein

I am convinced that the writer of the list works for the Italian Tourism Board, as SO many on the list are in Italy (I have spent considerable time in Europe, on several occasions, and never yet set foot in Italy, which I know is a stupid, stupid move on my part)

However, I can’t believe that Brussels Grand Place, (esp. when lit up at night) isn’t on this list, as it’s one of the most impressive things that I have ever seen, much moreso than Prague or the Alhambra, which are both quite amazing in their own right…

I got 18, practically all in Europe except for the NYC skyline.

Colosseum of Rome, St Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel, Louvre Museum, Versailles, Pompeii, Prague Old Town, Mezquita Cordoba, Dubrovnik, Uffizi Gallery, St. Basils Cathedral, Florence Cityscape, Kremlin, Leaning Tower Pisa, New York Skyline, Eiffel Tower, Hermitage Museum, Chambord Chateau.

I have nothing in the first 30 wonders, so I got quite something in store for me! I think that there’s quite some doubles in the list, though. For instance, it’s practically impossible to see the Kremlin and not see St. Basil’s Cathedral, and few people would go to St. Peter’s and not to the Sistine Chapel, or visit the Louvre and manage to miss the Eiffel Tower which is less than a mile from there. Same for the wonders in Venice and Florence, I guess. That said, all of the things in the list that I’ve been to have been awesome, so I’m not arguing that they shouldn’t be in the list. But they should have done it like they did it for Prague and Dubrovnik: just put the city as a whole.

So far the spread is 0 to 53 sites seen.

I like flying from Bali to Yogyakarta (which, believe it or not, is pronounced Jogjakarta and thus gets forever confused with Jakarta in foreigners’ minds) on the island of Java. The time zone runs right between the two islands and the flight time is one hour, so it’s one of those routes where you take off and land at the same time. Poof! You’re there!

The places outside of the US that I’d most like to see are Paris, Chartres, Jerusalem and the area, Petra, and Egypt.

I’d like to revisit Florence because I went there as part of a tour and we only spent 1 day there. Argh!

And I’d like to revisit England.

Psst…Ladahk, (only 1 visitor, it seems.)
