Why don’t you have air conditioning?
BECAUSE IT IS NEVER EVER EVER EVER THIS HOT!!!
Honestly; the temperatures this week have been the highest since records began (and they began a long time ago)
In a normal year we would only use AC on a few days. Central heating is much more necessary. (we also pay more for electricity than you do)
Because real men don’t need it
Nah - its what Owl said. It would be a waste of time/power since this weather is HIGHLY unusual.
Strange, where are all the people who were in the other thread laughing at us because the temperature wen’t over 110F?
coughAstrocough
I’m in California & its about 59 right now.
I have a question about england. It’s usually very cold there so they make their houses to keep heat & stay warm, right? So, if its hot there do the houses keep that heat?
One lady I know there said her one bedroom house has 9 heaters.
Pardon me, my ignorance is showing. Or at least, it was going to, until I opened this thread. I honestly didn’t understand why Europe was being so whiny about the heat…I mean, really, if it’s so hot, then just stay inside! With your nice, cool, central AC coming out of the multiple vents in every room! I mean, come on! DUH!
Oh…umm…nevermind.
Sorry, you’ll really have to pardon the Southern US dopers who can’t visualize a world without central AC. I can relate a little; there has been a summer or two where my AC kicked the bucket for a few days. My apologies
I suppose now is a bad time to mention that it’s a lovely 73 degrees F here? And that I was cold this morning walking to work in capris and sandals? I thought so.
Well it rarely gets that cold, but yes - our houses are designed to heat and retain heat. Which is a curse in temperatures like this.
Please read this, and then look at an atlas or something.
Its not too bad today i think. My office hasn’t got air con, but i haven’t really sweated much if at all today.
Unfortunately i’m going home in a few minutes and my flat, and particularly my bedroom seems to extremely good at retaining heat. The only way i’ve found to try and survive at home is to open the windows as much as possible, and go sit right right next to them desperately hoping for the smallest waft of a breeze. Either that or go down my local pub which has a beer garden!
It’s 73 in Houston this morning. It’s usually blistering hot here this time of year.
Be carfeful with the AC in your car, especially if you drive a Jaguar.
Heh. The weather map shows the high for Houston as 86 today. It shows the high for London as 90. Yikes. We haven’t had much of a genuine mid-to-high 90s Houston summer this year. The closest it got to a real Houston summer was last week, when the temperatures cracked 100 (for the first time all summer). The weather is very pleasant.
I was in London in June, and the temperatures were around 77. I must say that the hotel did not have air conditioning. We had to keep the windows and door open during the day for the temperature to grow tolerable. And the Underground wasn’t so cool to ride on, either. (Other than that, London was very nice.)
