The work had started and I can see the top of the first section from my office. It’s only a sixth of the size and it’s already near the roof tops of O’Connell Street. Here’s some pic’s of how it will look.
It’s a foreign site but the pics are the best I could find. There’s a lot of negativity about the project which looks likes it’s gonna be called “the stiletto in the getto” a Dublin tradition of naming public monuments in such a way. The only problem I have with it is that there will be no observation area at the top. If you’re going to build something that high let people go up it.
It will dwarf everything else in the city and will be pretty damn cool IMO.
It has no purpose other than to just be there (it was originally conceived to celebrate the millennium, but the corporation screwed up the planning permission… not like them to be incompetent  ). I think it’s great.
My votes go for:
The stiffy by the Liffey
or Bertie’s Erection
I am really looking forward to its completion. It’s not the most popular thing in the city at the moment, but I think people will grow to love it.
Until it’s finished I think it should be The Stump in the Dump
And for our friends from the country it could be The Nail in the Pale
The crane that they are using to put the thing up is I was told the biggest in Europe. It’s about 2 times higher than anything in the city and it’s only standing on it’s side
Given the fact that it was supposed to be the Millenium Spike or some such and the fact that it is so tall and there have so many delays and it is a monumental waste of money, I have to agree with whoever it was in the paper last week who called it
Hello and go raibh maith agat for the failte
Actually, I won’t be here for a while as I am off our of the country for the chrimbo, but I wll see you all back here in the New Year.
Just off to town to see how they are getting on with the big pointy yoke
