120 meter spire in Dublin

The work had started and I can see the top of the first section from my office. It’s only a sixth of the size and it’s already near the roof tops of O’Connell Street. Here’s some pic’s of how it will look.

It’s a foreign site but the pics are the best I could find. There’s a lot of negativity about the project which looks likes it’s gonna be called “the stiletto in the getto” a Dublin tradition of naming public monuments in such a way. The only problem I have with it is that there will be no observation area at the top. If you’re going to build something that high let people go up it.

It will dwarf everything else in the city and will be pretty damn cool IMO.

Just thought I’d share.

I should say that the stiletto in the getto will not be it’s official name

“the Pin in the Bin” has been suggested, as has “the Spire in the Mire” and the “Pole in the Hole”.

I would vote for “The Milligan” myself…

So what is it?
Looks to me like a big metal pointy thing, does it have a purpose?
Lightning rod?
interstellar antenna?
comet skewer?

It has no purpose other than to just be there (it was originally conceived to celebrate the millennium, but the corporation screwed up the planning permission… not like them to be incompetent  ). I think it’s great.

My votes go for:

The stiffy by the Liffey
or
Bertie’s Erection

I am really looking forward to its completion. It’s not the most popular thing in the city at the moment, but I think people will grow to love it.

I wouldn’t want it to be called Bertie’s Erection, purely because I dont want any monument associated to that gobsheen

I dunno, yojimbo.

It doesn’t look to me like you could get an observation deck in that thing.

The conception drawings look pretty cool, though.

I love the idea of putting up buildings / structures just for the craic. (something else for stag parties to piss against)

Could do with a few random pointy towers in other cities too.
Keeps me in a job.

More images here, for you to revel in.

One of the guys in my office here was partly responsible for the planning cock-up when he worked for Dublin Corp. (now the city council, IIRC) Ee-jit!

I hope you mean conceptual, as, with that thing, conception could be a tad painful…

Gah. Sorry, Aro.

I don’t even have a good excuse.

But I do want one of those things in my front yard.

Our tall pointy thing is taller than your tall pointy thing…

It needs a giant wooden splinter stuck on it’s tip.

Knitting needles of the Gods!

They should call it The Needle in the Haystack.

Until it’s finished I think it should be The Stump in the Dump

And for our friends from the country it could be The Nail in the Pale

The crane that they are using to put the thing up is I was told the biggest in Europe. It’s about 2 times higher than anything in the city and it’s only standing on it’s side

I’m going to be out the weekend its finished trying to get a bike tyre over it

call it “Bridget’s Delight”.

Given the fact that it was supposed to be the Millenium Spike or some such and the fact that it is so tall and there have so many delays and it is a monumental waste of money, I have to agree with whoever it was in the paper last week who called it

“The hieght of folly”

A new paddy on the board

Howaya curly chick.

Hello and go raibh maith agat for the failte
Actually, I won’t be here for a while as I am off our of the country for the chrimbo, but I wll see you all back here in the New Year.
