1960s(?) movie ID: College student gets pregnant, has a 'back-alley' abortion

I think it was released in the '60s, and I think it was black-and-white. A girl grows up with friends. She’s not as pretty as the others, nor as popular. She’s always in their shadow. It seems she’s always getting the short end of the stick. In college she’s desperate to lose her virginity. She has totally unsatisfactory sex with a guy, I think in a car. Of course she gets pregnant, and she seeks out a doctor who performs abortions illegally.

Spoiler:

She dies.

Maybe…

Thank you.

I thought it might have been early-'70s, but I wasn’t sure. And it’s in colour.

You didn’t ask, but Harlan Ellison’s story, Neither Your Jenny Nor Mine, from 1964, deals with just this subject matter, except they go to Mexico for the abortion. It, too, does not end well.

Probably not the movie that you’re looking for, but The Carey Treatment has a similar story: illegal abortion, a dead patient, but set in a hospital, not a back-alley. Looking at the credits, starring James Colburn, I’m surprised to see it was directed by Blake Edwards, and was based on Michael Crichton’s fourth novel titled A Case of Need.

It was Our Time.
