It was reported as such from the beginning, but here’s TABC’s direct confirmation their guy was working off duty as a security guard, and it even gives his name:
And one of the Houston area FBI agents, along with other Houston officials have been confirming it from nearly the beginning. These two were working for Lakewood off hours as paid security.
The fact there were innocent people hurt in the mess is certainly a legitimate basis for criticism, but the idea that these were some yahoo off duty cops playing at being heroes is pure fantasy. A person with an assault rifle entered a crowded building, fired several shots, and managed not to commit mass murder. That is certainly not the worst outcome imaginable.
The ready availability of firearms, our cavalier attitude towards giving those firearms to pretty much anybody - especially to somebody with a known history of issues, what else we could have done to prevent this from happening in the first place - these are all valid things to criticize.
But criticizing security guards for failing to take a rifle from somebody who was already firing it (!) and insinuating they were some sort of paper tigers for “escalating” the situation - again when shots had already been fired - is setting an unrealistic and grossly unfair bar.
They should bring back insane asylums and lobotomies. It’s tragic what happened to the church goers. Not all insane asylums were abusive. I’ve stayed in a mental hospital for ten days after my therapist called the ambulance because I made a video and talked about me having homicidal thoughts and I don’t act on it because it’s illegal. and I didn’t see anyone getting raped or beaten. I been in the psych ward three times.
How so? What is that based on?
Prior criminal record with multiple offenses and a few stints in jail for starters? Documented history of mental health problems that have required official treatment? This article touches on these but there are plenty of sources out there.
Over in MAGA land they’re already forming conspiracies that this was “another deranged trans” and the media are covering it up. No amount of logic or links will sway them.
This is why we can’t have nice things.

Long history of mental illness (diagnosed schizophrenic) and drug addict. The father, Carranza, a registered sex offender is currently in prison.
That child considered severely’ special-needs by CPS never had a chance of a stable life.
Thankful that the church hired off duty officers for security. This incident could have been much worse.

Absolutely. The person must have been in a severe mental health crisis to take a child to a possible mass shooting event.
I hope the child survives.
