2 recipes not found on internet (by me anyway)

And I would like to have them.

Recipe #1 was found sometime in the '80s, on the recipe page of the paper, and it was presented as a comic strip and was always a vegetarian recipe. The one I’m looking for was a household standard for awhile, but not so much that we remember how to make it. What we remember: cooked cantaloupe, soy sauce, brown rice, green onions. Maybe carrots? It was a grain salad. We liked it because everybody in the family ate it, which was a rare thing.

Recipe #2 was also in the paper, also in the late '80s-early '90s. Barbecue sauce made of caramelized onions and…I can’t remember. I do remember we liked it because there was no added sugar. The sweetness came from the onions, entirely. Except there may have been tomatoes, or tomato sauce, or possibly even cherries. But no added sugar (molasses, honey). Possibly mustard. It was delish. And a lot of trouble, so with having to cook a lot of meals I passed on that one. Well, now I have time.

I have googled the ingredients I remember. For the BBQ sauce, it looks like there are some caramelized onion BBQ sauces in cookbooks, but I can’t find an individual recipe. For the cantaloupe/soy sauce I am totally blank.

I thought you could find anything on the internet. Obviously I am looking in the wrong places.

Which newspaper? I would start there first. See if they have a food editor that you can email, maybe they can look through the archives for you.

Other than that, I got nothing. Cooked cantaloupe? That sounds intriguing.

You can try Ask Uncle Phaed, there are tons of people who read it and will send in suggestions.
