20 pounds of coffee

I have a coffee pot that grinds the beans right before brewing the coffee. I wouldn’t call it filthy, but it sure as heck isn’t clean. Worth the effort to clean everything though.

I just came across this thread, forgive me if I have a few questions.

First, how do you store it? You ordered a 5 month supply, so do you keep the unopened bags on the shelf? Freeze it? What about the open bags? Looks like a bag will last you 2 1/2 weeks, so do you take a precautions against having the end of that bag’s supply turn stale?

This is something I’ve fought for years. Unless I buy coffee whole bean a half pound or so at a time, by the time the last dose from bag/can is used I can taste a noticeable decline in quality. My dad has always stored his coffee in the freezer but I’ve never noticed any improvements by doing that. So I’m curious how others keep their coffee fresh, especially when purchasing a large quantity.

Second, how was it? I’ve tried Trader Joe’s and Kirkland and both have been disappointing. For a long time I bought coffee from local Portland roasters, first Stumptown and then Kobo’s. Both companies have sold out and the new owners have allowed the quality to take a dive. I love the San Francisco Bay brand that’s sold whole bean at Costco, but again it goes stale before I can use all of it—it comes in 3lb bags.

I used to get the bags of coffee beans from Costco, but like you, I noticed a decline in quality, as you say, for the 2nd half of the bag. Since I am the only one in the house who drinks coffee, it would last a very long time. I have done as you do, and switched to buying only about a half-pound fresh-roasted at a time, even tho it’s more expensive. I store it in a glass, airtight container. Here’s an article that talks about shelf life and preserving freshness with coffee beans.

I’d be interested in knowing of the OP detects any issues with flavor with the later-opened bags, or even now, since it’s been about 6 weeks since the purchase.

More like two weeks.

I store it in one of these (first row, second one down). It doesn’t turn stale.

I drink enough coffee that I no longer grind my beans, and just get ground coffee. The last pot tastes the same as the first.

I love it. That’s why I’ve been ordering it for so many years. I like Trader Joe’s French Roast, but not as much as Community Coffee’s French Roast. I haven’t had Kirkland in a years, but I remember liking it just a little bit better than Trader Joe’s. There are excellent coffees in the PNW. On the rare occasion we go out, I like the coffee from local roasters. But it often costs twice as much as I pay for Community Coffee and, as I said, I drink a lot of coffee. Try storing it in the Oxo container.

Well, that took longer than expected. We did take a week and a half vacation, but it still took about twice as long to use it up than I thought it would.

Tomorrow I’ll start on the 12-pound shipment.

I love Community club coffee. I use a cheaper brand that I love too. I am the only coffe drinker here so its my choice. I am a cheap date so I generally go the cheap brand I have taught myself to like.
I suspect you will have good luck with your order. You are my hero ( in food and beverage threads)!

Oh, yes indeedy! I’ve been drinking Community Coffee for years, and taking advantage of the discounts and free shipping, the price can’t be beat. (They just had a 20% off on $20 or more promotion.) Nothing like a taste of New Orleans in the Pacific Northwest! (I’ve really got to make some beignets.)

My daughter lives in N.O., we are going there on a visit soon. I will be on the trail of beignets and C.C. coffee.
