Say what now? (Not about missing the cut…)
That good, huh?
What a shame. Just imagine what the British Open would have been like. The greatest golfer in the world coming off some pretty hard times vs. a guy who has just won three majors in a row. Man, would that been something to look forward to. I like Michelson, but he is truly an idiot.
Well, he’s also anidiot that’s won a couple majors this year.
The British should be fun this year in any case.
I think it’s pretty damn early to say that Tiger is past his peak. He’s what…30 years old?
I watched his round on thursday and he seemed to me like he was playing in a daze. His head just wasn’t there. The guy was pretty tight with his dad. It’s no surprise he couldn’t really concentrate on a golf tournament yet. I also think missing the cut has to be humiliating for him and that he’ll have his concentration back for the British.
As for Lefty…bwahahahahaha. I loved the look on his face after he chunked that third shot on 18 and suddenly realized he had just given away the US Open. I can’t stand Mickelson. It’s partially one of those completely irrational sports hates but I also hear that he’s a prick in person and kind of an arrogant dick to the other players so any time he pees down his leg is always entertaining to me.
In truth, I didn’t keep score.
The course is only a 9-hole par 30, and was pretty much deserted (3:30 start on Father’s Day and 90 degree heat). I played two balls from tee to pin on most of the holes (at the Marshal’s suggestion. Good guys at this place). Between wanting to play for fun and confusing myself by playing two balls, I didn’t even bother with a scorecard. And I had a good, leisurely time.
Man, I was still feeling bad about the way I staggered in 5 over for the last 2 holes on Thursday (after spectacular drives on both) to lose a match (and some cash) for my team.
But watching those guys flounder around the last couple of holes was the cure for what ailed me.
I could just imagine what Phil was thinking - “I’ve hit so many lousy drives, I’ve GOT to catch one sooner or later!” Unfortunately for him, looks lile it will come later. Why on earth he hit driver on that last hole - after slicing into a garbage can on 17, he bounced it off a hospitality tent on 18. My god!
I’m not sure where all the Phil hate has come from lately. I tried to search for something, but all I came up with was a recent GQ article of 10 most hated athletes.
I tend to like him, just because he seems the best bet to challenge Tiger’s dominance. Don’t get me wrong - Tiger is awesome. But I hate the way everyone around him wilts on Sunday. Had hoped Phil would provide the competition.
Also, I think I envy him his rich SoCal lifestyle, with a beautiful wife and kids - even tho he is a lefty! Somehow or another, to me he seems more “human” than Tiger, who comes across as a cross between a corporation and a machine.
So - who got drunker last night - Mick or Monty?
I think some of the Phil hate just comes from the fact that he’s winning now, so he’s not the underdog that he was. But also there have been a lot of stories about how he is not well-liked on tour, and that his public demeanor is completely different than how he acts normally.
I think actually his second shot was the big mistake, not the driver. From watching his last few holes, it seemed that it was better to miss the fairway by a lot rather than a little. There were a few times where he was in the gallery with a decent lie, rather than somewhere in that crazy rough.
He tried for the hero recovery shot, with the risk that if he misses he loses the tournament. It just seemed like a crazy risk. Even if he’s just slightly off on that he could end up plugged in the bunker, or where Monty was in the rough. But then I don’t know how good he is at the shot he tried. Maybe he can put 4 of 5 on the green from there, and only have a disaster like he had 1 in 20 times.
I had heard the same, but when I did a rather extensive google search, all of the negative comments went back to that one GQ article. I haven’t seen anything in the regular papers, and I don’t read any sports or golf mags other than leafing through one during the occasional visit to the doctor’s office.
I agree - the 2d shot was the screw up. Looked like he had an alley to advance the ball back into the fairway. Up and down wins, bogey ties.
Was impressive to see the ball bouncing down the tent tho, no? I was surprised they didn’t have a shot of him pulling it out of the trash can on 17!
Another thing I thought of today is that Phil has personally lost two majors to somebody who layed up on 18. Payne Stewart was in that divot on 18, so he hit short and then got up & down. Then Toms had a similar situation in the PGA where he didn’t try for the green in 2, and made par to win.
That was a mistake but I still say the drive was the bigger one. All week, playing out of the rough on 18th has been death (not unlike the rest of the course) because you really need to hit the putting surface on that green. He had just driven into the rough on 17th and hadn’t really driven well all week. He should have smartened up, pulled out a 4 wood (I think he had that, if not, a 3 wood, or a long iron) and put one in the middle of the fairway. If I recall, he did that the the day before and came out with a par that really should’ve actually been a birdie.
In voting for shot #2, I think i was figuring it was his last clear chance to avoid disaster. He caught a hell of a break on his drive, and still had an easy bogey and a chance for an up-and-down par.
As wild as he was off the tee, I wouldn’t have been shocked to see him pull a 3-iron and hit it in a portapotty. When I’m golfing, little pisses me off more than intentionally playing it safe - and screwing that up!
I share your take on Tiger, though I admire his greatness.
Also, Phil is right handed. He plays golf as a lefty because he learned to play as a kid by standing opposite his father trying to emulate his stroke mirror-image style.
Was his father as big an ass as Phil, taking chances where none were needed? This was just another smackdown of a guy who lets his testicles play golf instead of his brain.
I’ve seen a lot of commentary about Phil’s meltdown today, and I am stunned that not a single pundit has made a reference to Tin Cup.
Phil played Kevin Costner’s role to perfection. And the movie meltdown was set at the US Open; this seems too perfect for comparison, and yet not one mention.
I say good for Phil. Grab your sack, play like a man, take your lumps.
Speaking of asshole fathers, apparently Tiger’s dad took a back seat to few, apparent bigamy and ignoring his first family being exhibit #1.
I’ve never particularly liked Phil. Don’t dislike hiim, but he just seems like such an idiot. Then he smartened up 2 years ago- -we had the new Phil. The new Phil knew when to not take out the driver and when to TYM. What we saw on Sunday was the old Phil. Bogey on #5, which should be a birdie hole. Nice little 1 foot duff from the rouch on that one, Phil. Then the errant tee shot on 18 with poor decision follow up. He needed to take double bogey out of the options and planned to either get up and down form the fairway, or take his chances on a play-off. As the more experienced player, the latter option wouldn’t have been that bad. Congrats on yet another #2, Phil. Good job.
Phil’s caddy should have broken Phil’s driver over his knee as they were walking to the 18th tee.
But would Phil have been able to shoot a 5 on 18 with just a 7 iron?
Bolding mine
You have proof he married two women?
You don’t make a Tiger by ignoring your first family, unless you are saying Tiger was not in the first. Please, say on…
