2007 Weight Loss Club. January

My body is doing strange things to me. I gained two and a half pounds overnight last night. I don’t know what I am doing. Maybe hormones, maybe water, whatever. I do know that in the past five days I have burned 4800 calories at yoga and that’s over a pound right there, so WTF BODY.

  1. My body is weird.

Alrighty. 2.5 down from January 1, after losing three then gaining them back then dropping one and then gaining two and JEEZ ENOUGH ALREADY.

I’m having problems, I think, due to my stupid yoga schedule. Burning 6000 calories a week, but only eating 1200 or so per day. Gotta drink more, gotta eat more. Never gonna frickin’ lose. However, I seem to be shrinking a bit.

Somehow, I missed posting in this month’s thread when it first opened, so I haven’t been getting emails, so I kinda, ummm, forgot about it. In my defense, I’ll say that in the past month, I’ve been down and out for better than two weeks on account of kidney issues.

I don’t really know what’s happening with my weight this month. The battery in my scale died, so I haven’t weighed myself at home at all. I have an appt. with my surgeon on the 25th, and will get weighed on that scale. Then I’ll come back and tell y’all what’s going on. So far, I’ve dropped just about 100lbs. Need to drop about 40 or 50 more.

I’m not sure I can believe this myself, but: I’ve eaten out the past two nights. At all-you-can-eat buffets; i.e., my arch-nemesis. (I got well on my way to my current weight from a 145-pound frame at high school graduation after living three years in a college dorm with an all-you-can-eat cafeteria. My dad always taught me how important it was to get your money’s worth from all-you-can-eat places. He’s diabetic and hypertense now …) And …

My eating plan seems to have survived. Last night, at the Asian buffet, I focused on rice, veggies, and sashimi; didn’t precisely track my nutrition, but I’m pretty sure I got through OK. (I was so glad they had sashimi as well as the usual Chinese fare. I love that stuff, and it kept me away from the sweet & sour chicken and fried egg rolls, which I love just as much …) Tonight, I was worried–took my kids to CiCi’s pizza on ‘support your school’ night. Made a big salad & made myself finish it before hitting the pizza bar, and made a ‘pizza plan’ before going up, and stuck to it. Wasn’t sure how I did, until I looked up their nutritional information on their website just now. But I hit all my targets for calories, fat, and fiber today. I’ll need to waive my usual late-night snack (I’ve been doing 5-6 small meals per day), but I remain on track. For now …

Gotta quit this string, though. I’m perfectly capable of eating two thousand calories at a sitting in one of those places. Don’t wanna push my luck.

sounds like you can count a few NSVs for yourself there

I’m struggling - already! but I still have ten days to lose 3 pounds. I want to net a loss of 8 for January - any more than that will be (pardon the dirty word) icing on the cake

NSVs?

non scale victories
things like making good foos choices in challenging situations, getting into a smaller size, adding minutes/distance to your exercise routine without effort, getting compliments from friends, coworkers, family. that sort of thing.
When I did Weight Watchers, the NSVs were as important, if not moreso, than pounds lost, because they were measures of success beyond the numbers. Sometimes the numbers don’t move so the NSVs become the reward for all your hard work.

I have a great NSV. I bought a jacket the other day and had to return it for a smaller size. Also, all of my pants are too big, so I guess I’m losing inches if not pounds.

I had a post all written out this morning but then someone decided that was a good time to switch to the new server.

Anyway, I’ve been putting lots of value in those NSVs you’re talking about. I’m not losing much but the differences are obvious. Most of my clothes are too big and I’ve bought a couple of new pairs of pants in a smaller size. My clothes look better on. Last weekend I saw my best friend who I haven’t seen in a few months. She actually thought I’d lost 20 pounds (try 8) since I saw her last, and said my butt looked tiny. It’s things like that that keep me going when the scale seems to be stuck.

Last night I tried a jog/walk combination on the treadmill. Definitely got my heart rate going a little faster. I just did it for the first 15 minutes but hope to build up eventually to jogging the whole time. I did 100 crunches too.

Same thing happened to me this morning yelloval. Probably for the best though, I do tend to go on and on.

asterion IANA nutritionist but if you are 3000-4000 calories then yes, you do need to be eating more than 1600 calories a day. Too few calories will cause your metabolism to slow and muscle loss. If that happens you’ll just store fat all that much easier.

In other news I did 15000+ steps on the pedometer 3 days this week. Yesterday it rained so I didn’t get to walk. This morning I only did the shorter walk so I still need about 7000 more steps to exceed 15000. I better go take a walk around the building.

My scale took a brief dip yesterday but today I’m right back up to 177 darn it.

That’s one of the reasons you’re not supposed to weigh yourself every day. There are daily fluctuations that average out over the course of a week, but the psychological impact of tiny gains is huge.

I learned an interesting formula during one of my medical fasts
Your weight X (11 for women, 12 for men) X 7 = # of calories you need each week to maintain your current weight
Now multiply your ideal calorie intake for whichever plan you are following and multiply *that * by 7
Subtract the 2nd # from the first, then divide that new number by 3500 (# of calories in a pound)
The result is the number of pounds you can expect to lose in a week.
(We are, of course, assuming that these are sensible calories, well balanced, high protein, high fiber calories - not junk food calories)

Ex - a 300 lb male needs 25,200 cal/wk to stay at 300
He goes on a 1750 cal diet and takes in 12,250/wk
He can expect to lose between 2 and 3 lbs a week - more if he exercises and drinks all his water.
It is not wise, unless you are being medically supervised, to go below 1000/day. No matter how much you have to lose.

Thanks!

Also: WTF? You edited!

new server, new options

Now, now. I’m quite sure we both had brilliant things to say.

After all, they say that great minds think alike.

Although, they also say that fools seldom differ.

I’m debating whether I’m going to go and weigh in tomorrow morning. It’s almost that time of the month, and I feel like if you poke me too hard I’ll pop!

Here for my weekly report.

I got on my stationary bike last Saturday and thought, “I’ll go for a long ride, over an hour. I’ll back the the resistance off and make up for it in duration.” I started pedaling and clicked the level down, and no change, down, down, down to Level 1, which felt the same as the 6 I had been riding at. Crank it all the way to 10, still nothing in the way of change. It was shot and frankly the crank was getting rough which bothers my bad knee. I still rode for the 70 minutes, but it was out of anger because I knew I’d end up wth a new bike.

By 1:00 that afternoon I was assembling my new Vision Fitness bike from Leisure Fitness. They were really nice folks who listened, and I got a bike that would stand up to the daily use I want to give it. It better, but I just consider the price tag an extra incentive to use it.

The tale of the scale says I am down 7.4 pounds this week. I am betting that is still inital water weight coming off. On the other hand, my clothes are fitting better, and the pants I was wearing under my belly are almost back where they belong.

Good luck and strong wills to all of my co-threadists in the coming week.
