2008 NHL Entry Draft (and related affairs)

I’ve got to pop into a meeting for a bit so I’ll make this short and maybe they’ll be some interest.

Big news so far:
Chris Mason to St. Louis for a 4th round pick.
Ray Emery and Dan Cloutier placed on waivers.
Jamaal Mayers to Toronto for 3rd round pick.

I don’t know why the Leafs traded for Mayers. A 3rd round pick is a crapshoot but it has more value than a 33 year old 3rd/4th line winger.

What is going to happen to Malkin? I’ve seen him going to LA for the second overall pick and others, as well as Russian teams trying to sign him.

Malkin is under contract next season. He’s not going anywhere. The Penguins might have to trade his rights next summer if the contract he wants won’t fit in their salary structure, but until then he’s a Penguin.

Frees up the spot occupied by Tucker. I’ll bet Tucker’s traded.

They could have just brought up Williams or Devereaux or Boyce to fill that spot.

Mayers doesn’t help the rebuilding process; he’ll make no more of an impact than any of those players and he cost us a draft pick. I hate the concept of trading away picks when you’re trying to rebuild.

I hear ya’. But at least Fletcher has some picks to trade this year!

Fuck, Ottawa finally develops a pretty good goaltender and he turns into an absolute flake. Goddamn it.

So my least favorite team, the Leafs, drafted my favorite player in Schenn. Enjoy him, he’s exactly what the leafs need.

Jesus Christ, two bottom feeders just showed exactly why they are bottom feeders. Jokinen for Boyton, Ballard and a second? Has Jacques Martin gone mad? That pales in comparison with LA trading Cammaleri and the 28th-overall pick for the 12th-overall pick. Trading Mike Cammaleri to move up 5 spaces in the draft? Lunacy.

Agreed. I don’t what Florida and LA were thinking.

Love the move by the Leafs. I love that they got into the Top 5; I didn’t want them to draft Filatov. I have big concerns about drafting Russians with the lack of a transfer agreement and the starting of that new Russian league. Why would anyone play here when they can play at home and make double or triple the money?

Been a long time since the Leafs drafted well in the first round: 1985?

In hindsight the year that’s really gotta hurt is '97 when The Islanders got Luongo with what would have been Toronto’s pick (who would be traded to Florida in one of the worst trades in NHL history - one of the reasons why I don’t pay any attention to what Milbury says on TSN. The other being the Yashin trade).

They did okay in 1986 with Vinnie Damphousse. But yeah, drafting hasn’t been Toronto’s strong suit, at least in the last few decades anyhow.

So, Mats is apparently off to Montreal. This saddens me.

It’s been pretty hush-hush about what we get in return.

I’ve already come to terms with that fact that he’s going to Montreal; I’m just curious what he’s going to get paid and what we’re getting back.

I see the master plan now.

Clean house. Suck for a year and draft Tavares.

Why not?

ETA: OK, have a shot at Tavares.

You have to get through us first.

I’m 100% serious here. Gerber really is that bad.

I figured I’d just bump the thread rather than start a new thread just to cover the free agent movement.

The biggest news right now happens to be in Detroit. The reigning Stanley Cup champs kept Brad Stuart and signed goalie Ty Conklin and Marian Hossa. Hossa signed a one year deal with the Wings for well under market value because he felt they had the best chance to win the cup. Gotta say their chances look pretty damn good now.

As I stated earlier today on Facebook…"(Kid_A) hates (is insanely jealous of) the Detroit Red Wings. Hossa? Seriously?"

Very quick summary before I head home for the day, the Leafs are going to suck, Ottawa’s goaltending is really going to suck, and for everyone’s sake, Mats make a decision.

P.S. The owners are idiots. The players have suprised us all and taken them to the woodshed. Good for them…I’d take the money too if the owners were trying to give it away.

No crap. The Rangers are spending money once more like it’s 1999. They tossed a pile of it ($6.5 million a season) at Wade Redden for a six year deal. There’s also the rumored two year $20 million dollar deal Vancouver sent to Mats Sundin. Way to break the system.

Chicago took a big step by signing Brian Campbell. They were really close last year and this signing should push them into the playoffs if everyone stays healthy. The addition of Huet in net doesn’t hurt either. I’m glad the schedule is changing so we won’t have to face them eight times in a season.

Tampa Bay also improved greatly. Adding Roberts and Malone (voted by even Detroit fans as the toughest S.O.B. in the playoffs) gives them depth and grit. Kolzig may be in the twilight of his career, but he’s still good and makes them solid in goal.

Other signings of note (to me. There have been a ton of other signings. I just stick to the ones that I think will make a difference): Sean Avery signs with the Dallas Stars, giving them Claude Lemieux the next generation, and the Devils signed Bobby Holik and Brian Rolston. I’m not sure that signing Avery is the answer to Dallas’ problems, but teams play better when he’s on the ice. Holik and Rolston are good two way players and will line up well with Madden.
