I have switched to Comedy Central. My stomach is no longer in a knot. Now we’ll see if Obama gets a mandate.
My whole house erupted in squees and yelps at “Arizona is currently too close to call”
It’s not a win, but it’s definitely a bit of a slap in the face for the McCain crowd.
total of 206, plus 9 for CO, 55 for CA that they haven’t called yet. By my count that makes…
270
The networks will call a state if the exit polls are heavily in favour of one candidate. That’s why states with 0% reporting or the other candidate leading are getting called.
I just broke down, gave up the last of my doubts, and ran out for a bottle of champagne.
Oh, and while I realize this is totally unclassy to do, and henceforth I shall rein in my inner asshole, just this once I will:
GLOAT
Sorry, but considering the exit poll thing, I’m not relaxing. I don’t fully believe in the Ohio call. We’ll just have to see if Obama can really pull this one out.
Congrats Dems. It was time to take a large ass kicking. Not so much in the electoral college or popular vote but that the Democrats will control both houses of congress and have the White House.
Now I’m curious to see how far they over reach. Just as how the Republicans did.
The state of my birth and youth (Ohio) and the state of my adult years (Iowa) have both come through – though I’d bet that both Logan County OH and Fayette County IA have gone Republican because Lincoln won the war.
Shit, we can solve all our voting machine, paper trail, voter fraud problems right now … we can just call exit polls legally binding. Think of all the hanging chads that would have been saved.
I’m going insane over here. I don’t want to celebrate yet but I’m jumping outta my skin. I’m watching Jon Stewart for comic release.
Come on NC and FL!
And many, many thanks to the hard working Obama campaigners in OH.
BBC has Obama at 207, so all he needs is California and some loose change.
I’m learning that British journalism can be as lame as in the US.
Reporter: I’m here with Eddie Izzard. As someone who works in the US and the UK, what effect will an Obama victory have on your line of work?
Izzard: Well, I think an Obama administration will… MY line of work? You mean COMEDY? (stares in befuddlement) Well, it will be important for the whole word, not so much my line of work.
Reporter: And now, here’s Erica Jong…
It’s based on 4 things. You have the recent pre-election polls. You have exit polls. You have past election results and known numbers of dem/gop-registered voters in various counties. And you have early results. So take Michigan. You’ve got recent polls showing double digit leads for Obama. Exit polls are similar. Now you compare the very early returns (usually from rural counties) against what you’d expect to see based on the registration patterns where those results come from. So suppose counties X, Y, and Z voted 60-40 for Bush in '04 while Kerry won the state, and now early results show McCain up 55-45 in those same counties in the first results while all polling data shows a very strong Obama lead statewide. The early results confirm the polling, despite the raw numbers favouring McCain, so you call the state for Obama.
believe it!
Okay, there’s two projections I trust; Nate Silver at 538, and when Fox affiliates cut to sitcoms.
Well it’s a bloody disaster for comedians I’d say. Bush & the Republican party were such easy meat.
They just called Wyoming for McCain. Oh no! 3 electoral votes!
I’m so proud. Orange County (FL) where I’ve mostly lived, and work, is 59-40 in Obama’s column right now. Seminole (where I actually live) is 51-49… but I’ll take that.
Yeah, I’m worried about that too. And also about the folks who expect change overnight.
Heh, John Bolton is pissed. He’s blaming the media and the BBC for everything. He almost demanded that the BBC fire one of their reporters for ‘arguing’ with some republican guy.
I win $270 if Obama gets 375 EV.
That means I need Indiana, Virgina and Florida to go for Obama. I don’t care if he doesn’t need those states, *I need them. *
Go Obama!
CNN has the Democratics with 54 Senate seats(including the two independents), with 10 yet to be decided. It looks to me that their only hope of getting to 60 is to win Louisiana, Colorado, Minnesota, Alaska, Oregon and Idaho(but I’m hardly an expert in American politics).
