2011 CFL Season Thread

Well, the Riders org has pulled the plug on Head Coach Marshall and Offensive Co-Ordinator Doug Barry.

Based on Facebook posts, it looks like there is much rejoicing in Riderville.

Going back to Miller. Interesting.

So I come back from the restaurant, turn on the TV and see BC 34-EDM 1. Wow. Eight sacks for BC.

And now a safety…36-1.

I love this league; anything can happen.

Yeah - those losers! the Riders have never failed to earn at least three points in a game this year.

As a Blue Bombers fan, I’ve been enjoying this season. Although last year when they went after each other with snow shovels in practice was entertaining too.

Bri2k

ex-coach Marshall says he was surprised by the firing: Marshall fires back:

Your team’s just lost its seventh game in the season, having only won once, and you’re surprised that you’re fired? He must have been the only one in the Province who was surprised. I’m afraid that’s further proof that he wasn’t the guy for the job.

So, are you suggesting that the Riders incorporate snow shovels into their game plan for the Labour Day Classic? sort of like folding chairs with WWE wrestling?

Maybe he was surprised it took so long?

Last night: beer, poutine, pizza and football.

Tonight: beer, ribs, football. Starting with Als at Stamps.

GO ALS GO!

I can’t remember the last time I ate produce in Montreal…

Today, I ran into one my more-catholic-than-the-pope grade school French teachers, while wearing my Calvillo jersey and Als cap. I found out she’s been an Alouettes fan since the 60s, which really came as a shock to me…I guess football’s a lot bigger in Quebec than I ever imagined!

In his first game back as Head Coach, Miller achieved the following:

  1. Score first;

  2. Lead at the end of each quarter;

  3. Prevent the other team from scoring a TD for the entire game;

  4. Win a home game.
    Marshall wasn’t able to do any of those things, in eight games as Head Coach.

Couple of unexpected results today:

– Stamps (at home) walloped by Eskimos, 35-7. I thought that the Stamps would do better then they did.

– And what I found most surprising: Als loss to the Ti-Cats, 44-21, in Hamilton. I thought the Als might make a better showing.

What happened?

I’m not getting worried until next week. If Montreal can beat Hamilton at home, we’re good to go. :slight_smile:

The Alouettes are missing several of their starters on the defensive side due to injuries… not that that explains everything, but it’s certainly a huge piece of the puzzle. I find it hard to believe that Calvillo and Trestman won’t find ways to get this team back in gear.

Every game this week was one-sided. I always find it weird when that happens.

Well - that was satisfying. Sending 4 'TOUCHDOWN!!!" texts to my husband (who had to work) in a row caused my phone to get worried I was spamming him, but otherwise, no complaints there. When Calvillo is on, he’s ON. That first half was beautiful to watch.

Haven’t been around the Boards much the past little while, so have a two week-old update to give.

During the Labour Day Classic, at one point on a field goal attempt, the red flags all flew.

The Ref faced the cameras, put both hands on his cap, and said the fateful words:

“Too many men on the field…”

[long pause]

“Winnipeg!”

And there was much rejoicing in Riderville. :D:p:D

Alouettes won on Friday, which makes me happy. Winnipeg lost to the Argos last night - and lost a lot of players to injury as well - which puts the Als only one game back of the Peg going into their game against each other next week. Last I heard, Calvillo is still questionable for next week after a huge hit that resulted in his getting knocked in the chin by a helmet and then knocked out cold as he hit the ground (not really a dirty hit, more of a bad luck thing). Very worrisome!

And the Lions completely mauled apart the Roughriders in a thoroughly entertaining game! I don’t even like the Lions, but I love watching the Roughriders lose, especially at home, and that interception by Ryan Phillips had me laughing out loud, because the camera angle pretty much had him popping up out of nowhere to snatch the ball and run for a TD.

Stamps at TiCats this afternoon, and then the [del]Bulldogs[/del]Habs take on the Bruins in Halifax tonight. I love this time of year!

The Alouettes are still tied for first in the East, and Anthony Calvillo is now the all-time pro-football passing leader. Whether or not you feel it’s valid to compare the CFL to the NFL for some of these records, I think that this one, at least, is impressive no matter where you play.

Classy congratulations messages from Allen, Moon, Marino and Berman (awesome message partially in French, and a WTF to Brett Favre who apparently couldn’t be bothered?) though I question the wisdom of having a 15 minute ceremony right smack in the middle of a football game. I guess leaving it to the last play of the 3rd quarter, and having it occur on a touchdown play makes a pause a little more fitting, but how weird would it have been had it happened on a 3 yard pass to put them at 3rd-and-5 or something? I love that Jamal Richardson didn’t realize that the record was broken and tossed the ball into the crowd…huge kudos to the fan(s) that threw it back so that it could be given to Calvillo!

1 point. Do the Roughriders know they are playing football, not hockey? Were they showing solidarity with the Winnipeg Jets by not scoring more than them? As much as I’ve been amused by how awful they are this year, even I’m beginning to feel a little bad for them…9 points in 3 games? Ouch!

I got suckered into the 200 dollar commemorative frame for my game ticket. But I didn’t pay an extra 200 for it to be autographed by A.C. :slight_smile:

I’m kind of jealous! Our plans to go to a game fell through and we won’t be able to go next week. Assuming there’s a playoff game at the Big Owe we might try and get tickets to that. I have yet to go to a game!

You know what’s awesome about this team? After this game - a rather big win and with all the excitement of the record - some of the players, including Anthony Calvillo, went to the Welcome Hall Mission to serve food to the homeless. How cool is that?

Good Grantlandarticle on Calvillo (from a nicely non-condescending perspective).

Yeah, they do great civic work. My dad died of Lou Gehrig’s and I know some of Tony Proudfoot’s relatives here in Ottawa, so I was really touched when they did the “Als for ALS” fundraiser earlier in the summer. Class acts all of them!
