Tom Waits
Chuck Willis
Who will get in? Who will get in? Discuss.
My votes for who should:
Alice Cooper
Neil Diamond
Dr. John
LL Cool J
Darlene Love
I’ve always enjoyed Donovan. Sunshine Superman, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Mellow Yellow, Season of the Witch, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Jennifer Juniper, etc. He was thick in the middle of R&R’s greatest years hanging with members of the Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, Moody Blues, Hendrix. Yeah, I’d like to see him in.
No huge standouts on the list - an obvious one would be Alice Cooper because of his/their influence on theatricality and horror in rock and some enduring songs.
I guess I would say that folks like the Beasties, LL Cool J, Donna Summer and Laura Nyro are standout artists, but not what I think of as “rock” artists, so they aren’t clean, easy Yes’s. I would go with those 4 because of the quality of their music over folks like Bon Jovi, who moved a lot of product but is more of a guilty pleasure than a Hall of Fame artist.
So -
Alice Cooper
Beasties
LL Cool J
Donna Summer
Laura Nyro
I enjoy artists like Neil Diamond, Tom Waits and the JGBand, but they didn’t have the influence that these others had on music overall, imho. And Donovan would be more of a nostalgia vote for me…
Not that I really care about the place. I had a chance to go into the Hall of Fame a few weeks ago when I was on a road trip with my husband and his brother, but I decided to stay outside and watch the Air Show that was going on at the same time.
The whole “rock and roll” element of it is so broad now, isn’t it? Which I think it a very good thing, it’s good to be diverse, it’d be boring if every year the same type of artists were being inducted.
I want both Chic and Donna Summer to make it in this year (I think they’ve both been nominated before?) but I don’t think they’ll put two late-70s dance artists in at the same time, so it could be one or the other, with the one who misses out probably getting in within the next few years. Both have been so incredibly influential in the world of dance music.
Tom Waits will probably get in, maybe the Beastie Boys too.
Now that Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince have been inducted, get Kate Bush on there and all my four favourite artists will be in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
I don’t take the whole thing super seriously but I think it’s fun to see who gets in every year.
This is just getting fucking ridiculous. Again, for the 11th straight year, Rush doesn’t even get nominated while these guys do?
Seriously, does anyone here really thing that most of that list has been as successful, famous, or influential on music as the members of Rush? Entire generations of musicians have grown up (I was one) wanting to be able to play like them.
The recent documentary on their careers, “Beyond the Lighted Stage” had many very good musicians describing the impact on their lives and decision to do music of the members of Rush.
Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)
Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails)
Sebastian Bach (Skid Row)
Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine)
Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
Kim Mitchell (Max Webster)
Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters)
Vinnie Paul (Pantera)
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)
Jason McGerr (Death Cab for Cutie)
Zakk Wylde (Ozzy)
Danny Carey (Tool)
That’s just a start. If you were 14 and into metal and hard rock in the early 1980s you worshipped at their altar.
24 gold records
14 platinum records
Hell, their LAST record went platinum, 30 odd years after their first record was released. Can any of these other has-beens claim to still be making music?
Beastie Boys
Chic
Neil Diamond
Dr. John
Darlene Love
Donna Summer
Tom Waits
Should never, ever be mentioned in the same sentence as “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”, but will likely get in, since they’ve inexplicably garnered a shred of critical respectability over the years:
Speaking as a local, you did the right thing. Nothing against the place, but you can go next time. The Air Show is awesome and is there only one weekend. You can’t always get buzzed by a Blue Angel.
Yeah, it’s a little confusing. I’m not even a Rush fan, but it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense to not nominate them, but nominate Chic, who had a very short run and weren’t half as influential.
Really, though, the very idea of a hall of fame dedicated to bringing stuffy respectability to rock and roll, a genre of music that so famously wallowed, right from its very beginning, in glorious disrespect? Talk about ludicrous.
Who decides on these nominees? I can’t take this HOF seriously when bands like Rush and Kiss can’t even get nominated while non-rock acts like LL Cool J and Tom Waits get in there. Who the hell is Laura Nyro? never heard of her. Never heard of Joe Tex either? How do they rate getting consideration before Kiss and Rush? Real rock seems to get short shrift in this Hall. Chic gets in before Rush? What the fuck? Does anyone involved in the nominations even like rock and roll?
