I’m not much into piano rock either, but just to be clear, by "keyboards,"I was talking about synthesizers. I never heard people call pianos “keyboards.” we called them pianos.
I thought this thread was about The 2011 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees, but I seemed to have received an unwanted ticket to The Dio Show: Neverending Edition.
“we” “us” “people I jammed with” “subgenre” and of course… "If it had keyboards it wasn’t metal.
This is a crystal clear example of the problem you get into all the time. You equate your opinion, your experience, your group…with some larger truth. In this case, your passion for 80’s METAL somehow became you dismissing some of the greatest musicians in rock and roll as every thing from “pussy” and “pop” to simply “not rock”.
Why do you feel compelled to do this? Are you unaware of it? You’re perfectly entitled to prefer what you prefer, and no one would argue. But your preferences do not define rock!
You’re also doing some interesting backpedaling now that you’ve had it pointed out to you what a major role KEYBOARDS play in rock.
Well, that’s because, as you’ve now clarified, your frame of reference is defined by a group of people who, like you, focused pretty exclusively on 80’s metal and dissed everything else. But you and your crowd were not, and are not, the arbiters of anything except what you particularly like. And that leads to you making sad little comments like this.
Dio, the world and human experience are so much larger than you. Absorbing that reality would save you a lot of grief.
I’m talking about how THEY thought, not necessarily myself (though I wan’t far away from them philosophically). My range of knowledge was much larger than most of the guys I jammed with. I used to buy all kinds of songbooks, including a lot of oldies and pop standards (I mean seriously un-rock stuff like Bert Bacharat) to study songwriting. Somehow I never came across this Nyla chick.
Boo hoo. Stop being ridiculous and you won’t get piled on.
But the people who continue it on and on should really just drop it - so Dio has a narrow tastes, big deal. He doesn’t think anything with a keyboard on it is good. Whoopee. Is it that important? It’s not like he’s actually making the nominations. He should be able to have his say and it shouldn’t cause a massive thread derailment about “Dio’s definition of rock”, a subject I could not possibly care less about.
That is exactly what you did, after Twixter, RealityChuck and WordMan said that she was very deserving, you came in and questioned Laura Nyro getting in. Other people, notably Equipoise, tried to fight your ignorance and then you dug in defending it.
There is nothing in what I said that was remotely disruptive or hijacking. I exressed opinions about who should go in just like everybody else did. I said Kiss should get in. Other people are saying “Kiss sucks.” How is that any less objectionable than me saying that I think Rush should get in before somebody I never heard of? Give me a break. I never even said she shouldn’t go in at all (I don’t know), just that she shouldn’t go in before Rush.
Because, and this I think is an important point, the people who say Kiss sucks say that because they have heard Kiss and decided they did not like Kiss. They have an informed opinion about Kiss. You have an uninformed opinion about Laura Nyro because you have not heard her. See the difference?
You’re ranking things you have never heard. That is pretty definitively ignorant.
