2012 Fantasy Football - general discussion

Though ESPN PPR ranks have both Decker and Brown way ahead of Turner. Turner is in the 60s in that ranking with Decker and Brown in the 20s and 30s. In their regular top 300 ranks that’s reversed with Turner in the 30s and Decker/Brown in the 60s. So maybe I wasn’t as crazy as I thought.

Brown is a quality pickup for a dynasty league isn’t he?

Depends on the settings. How many players can you keep? What are your restrictions?

We keep the full roster year to year. We draft rookies only going forward in an NFL style draft based on reverse standing (so the last place team gets the first pick in every round), everything else needs to be picked up via waivers and free agency.

Looking at it more, yeah - I’d rather have Brown than Turner. But with your glut of WR and thinness at RB, that’s a net loss on your starting roster. You should look into packaging your aging WRs like Wayne and Smith, and trade for Brown.

It’s not that Turner is inherently worth more. It’s that you already have all the wideouts you can eat but you’re thin at RB.

Fair enough. I need to stop thinking so much about the future and stick with trying to keep the team I have running this season.

The guy who drafted MJD posted that he is interested in selling him, so I might be able to get him on the cheap after all.

Not to derail the discussion, but I wanted to get opinions on something I was toying with doing for the league that I run. I was thinking of doing a silent auction to determine the first and last draft positions. Essentially, we would get everyone together, get them to write down their bids, then the highest and lowest bids would get the first and last draft positions (respectively). The high bid would have to contribute that amount of money to the pot, which will be awarded to the eventual league champion. Nobody else would actually have to pony up their bid amount, but the lowest big proffered would pick last. Any thoughts on that system?

Derail away. The only reason we are talking about me is no one else has brought up a new topic.

I like your system, but I don’t like that only the high bid contributes to the pot. I get why you would do it that way but it makes things, I think, less fun than if everyone is contributing and punishes winning the bid fairly severely. Give the last place, or even the last 3 places, a pass on contributing to the pot and you get the same basic effect without ensuring that the first round pick only gets his contribution back to him.

Well, the reason I would only have the winning bid actual pay is because they’re the only one actually getting something in return (the first pick).

Well, why not just auction off every pick that way? Second bid gets second pick, and so on. People who don’t bid get the remaining spots at random.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. There is a lot of value to be had picking early, and a bigger pot that everyone contributes to is more fun. And if a couple people don’t contribute and pick last, that can be interesting too (though I think I read that picking in the middle is worse than last in a snake draft due to the wraparound effect. Teams that pick 1&2 and 9&10 typically have the best seasons. No cite though)

And, I have traded for MJD. It cost me Steve Smith and Jackson which is probably an overpay, but if MJD joins up with camp it will be worth the cost I think. I really like Smith, but you guys are right, I am stacked at WR.

Here’s what I’d do - don’t give the top pick to the top bidder. Give the top bidder their choice of draft position. Some people may prefer a lower pick and still want to pay for it.

So every year, I end up trading DEF and K pretty frequently, looking for good matchups. (That’s not frowned upon, is it?) Anyway, I was thinking that if that’s my plan, then there’s no point in drafting them, is there? Wouldn’t it make more sense to pick up and extra RB and WR, and wait until the preseason is over to drop one of each and get DEF and K lined? That way, I’m guarding against preseason injuries and get the maximum time to evaluate how everyone is playing. I’m drafting on the 23rd. Thoughts?

If your league rules allow it I think it is a great plan. In one of my leagues we have a rule that you must draft a legal starting lineup but otherwise I think it’s a fantastic idea.

What NAF said. Most draft clients will autodraft or force you to draft an eligible roster.

Oh, maybe yahoo will force it on me. Hadn’t considered that. I guess we will see!

Help me work through a trade offer I just got. On the face of it, it seems like a bargain for me, but too good offers rarely end up being as good as they seem, and the guy offering it to me isn’t an idiot. I am starting to look for the sucker in this deal, so can you guys help me figure this out?

Same dynasty league 12 team, full point PPR, we keep anyone who is on our roster at year end drafting only rookies. Some money (not much but some) is available as a prize so, I would like to win now if possible but who knows.
We play 1 QB, 2RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, standard scoring D/ST and K and a WR/RB/TE flex

My roster has changed a touch since I last posted it, so for ease of reference here is what I currently look like.

Manning, Peyton DEN QB
Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB

Bradshaw, Ahmad NYG RB
Hardesty, Montario CLE RB
Jones-Drew, Maurice JAC RB
Thomas, Daniel MIA RB
Turner, Michael ATL RB

Bess, Davone MIA WR
Crabtree, Michael SFO WR
Ford, Jacoby OAK WR
Heyward-Bey, Darrius OAK WR
Jackson, DeSean PHI WR
Jennings, Greg GBP WR
Johnson, Steve BUF WR
Wayne, Reggie IND WR

Gates, Antonio SDC TE
Tamme, Jacob DEN TE

Gostkowski, Stephen NEP PK
Jets, New York NYJ Def

Here is the trade offer

I get
Luck, Andrew IND QB
Ryan, Matt ATL QB
McGahee, Willis DEN RB
Austin, Miles DAL WR
Streater, Rod OAK WR
and
first round pick in 2013

I give:
Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB
Wayne, Reggie IND WR

and I would probably drop Davon Bess, Michael Crabtree and Jacoby Ford, though I might drop the Jets D instead of one of those three while I see how things shake out with Ford and Crabtree.

What the hell am I missing? Rodgers is good, very good, but…that good?

I don’t make that trade. Rodgers is going to be better than either Ryan or Luck, in all probability. Manning is a fine back up, so you don’t need a QB.

Miles Austin is a slight upgrade, but not a huge one. McGahee is old and inconsistent. Streeter? Fine, but better than what you already have?

How high do you value a first-round draft pick, I guess?

If you can switch out Ryan and McGahee for a top RB, I’d maybe do that. It’s a ton of risk though.

Edit: Aaron Rodgers is 28 years old. He’s got 6-8 years of solid performance in front of him (barring injuries). Luck, if he both remains healthy AND becomes what so many hope he becomes, has what - 12-13 years?

I drafted my team Tuesday (Aug 28) and I think I did well with it. I forgot to put in my keepers in time and was locked out by ESPN, so I had to start anew. Considering how bad my team was last year (Hamlet utterly shredded my roster in the “Rate my Roster” thread), I have nowhere to go but up.

This year I have:
QB Philip Rivers, SD

RB Matt Forte, Chi

RB Fred Jackson, Buf

WR Calvin Johnson, Det

WR Demaryius Thomas, Den

TE Vernon Davis, SF

FLEX Darrius Heyward-Bey, Oak

D/ST 49ers D/ST

K Mason Crosby, GB

And my bench is:

Robert Griffin III, Wsh QB

Owen Daniels, Hou TE

Shane Vereen, NE RB

Michael Floyd, Ari WR

Mikel Leshoure, Det RB (My 15th pick; I’m a hopeful Lions fan, but I didn’t see anyone better at RB still available when I picked him).

So, Hammie, how bad is it this year? For reference, last year I had Matt Ryan, MJD, Peyton Hillis, and a bunch of shit I can’t remember. It was bad enough to take 6th in a 12 team league.
