0-4 for the day and on schedule for 0-6!!
Whoops! You’re right, I forgot about the Buffs beating my Rebs.
I generally agree in terms that people should be able to do what you want with their lives and pursue their dreams and riches however they choose. BUT as more and more players skip college altogether or only go for one year, not only is the quality of college basketball being eroded/watered down but for fans, the continuity of the teams for the major schools in hoops is now broken. I can’t even keep up with the names of the kids on my squad (UK) anymore. I do realize that Calipari is an extreme example of this, but its happening at all the schools that attract NBA-quality talent.
I’m a bit fuzzy on the details, but how does the NFL get around this? Wasn’t the NFL’s argument that men’s bodies at the freshman age aren’t developed enough to play in the NFL (which wouldn’t be true of basketball)? Didn’t Maurice Clarett famously challenge this “rule” and lose?
In my gut I just feel like these star basketball players are already so damn spoiled and pampered from the high school level upward that they should consider a free ride into college as a privilege and be made to honor a commitment to it for more than one year.
Agreed. Forcing college on anyone doesn’t seem right to me. I think the Brandon Jennings experiment turned out to be such a success that forcing 2 college years will just send many 18-year old kids overseas for their first paycheck. Then they’ll all come back after 2 years with that annoying Tony Parker accent.
Well, my 'Noles didn’t cover the spread, but I’m glad we managed to get the win. Mad props to the Bonnies for playing a terrific game.
ETA: Not really looking forward to having to play Cincy. They’re a big, strong team and they’re at least as motivated to win as FSU is. Should be a hell of a game Sunday.
What the hell was that Bonny thinking trying to shoot a 2? They were down 3!!!
It’s a nice thing to have continuity and recognizable players on the big name teams, but I don’t think this is a compelling reason to keep guys from going to the NBA after one year in college. I’m also not sure how the current rates of departure compare to the rates of underclassmen going pro before the rules were changed a decade ago or even before that. I think the dam broke a long time ago.
I think that’s the gist of it, yes.
This has nothing to do with the price of tea in China. The scholarships are a two-way street: the school gets something, the player gets something. You can make a pretty good argument that the school gets more and risks less. If you are that concerned about the players being spoiled (that word again), then make the schools give them guaranteed four-year scholarships and make the coaches committ to the schools long term. Then at least everybody is making the same commitment.
It’s happening a little more often, but I’m not sure it will ever be very common. We’ll see.
Come on, Spartans! You can do it!
Yeah, Missouri’s really got their hands full, don’t they?
Aye, they do. I’m really impressed with Mizzou’s Pressey, but DDAMN! the Spartans just will not lie down. They actually look relaxed, and every time Missouri gets that “buckled down” look, Norfolk St. just comes back downcourt and bangs in a shot to re-take the lead.
ETA: The line on this game, btw, was Missouri by 21½!
It will destroy my bracket but I am rooting for Norfolk St. right now.
How can anyone not be rooting for them right now, unless they’re a Mizzou fan? Norfolk State is playing at am astounding level right now.
I’m a Jayhawk fan, so you know who I’m rooting for!
NORFOLK STATE WINS!
NORFOLK STATE WINS!
OMFG what a game! O’Quinn was a monster for the Spartans! I like Coach Evans, too; he’s fun to watch because he doesn’t live behind his eyes.
So far, the best game of the tournament IMO.
Wow, very cool.
Holy shit, now Duke is finding themselves challenged by Lehigh. Go Mountain Hawks!
Ladies & Gentlemen, with both the Duke-Lehigh game and the Ohio-Michigan games winding down, I hereby declare Freaky Friday to be in effect!
ETA: Good job, Bobcats!
Not looking good for the #2 seeds today… and my Jayhawks will be starting shortly. Making me a little nervous here!
As long as Lehigh can hit their foul shots, they’ve got it.
Two #15’s winning?
