2014 NFL Draft

Not even close. He’s not as fast, not as strong, and not as savvy as Jordy Nelson.

But Jordy Nelson is the #10, by yardage, WR in the league. You can’t expect a 5th round pick to do that, can you?

He’s a fine possession receiver who will add depth and play hard. I’m fine with that for now.

WOW! The Bears just grabbed Kiper’s guy David Fales. Well, I was on about them getting a developmental QB here but not the right guy. Fales’ accuracy and quick release make him a great fit for the Trestman system, but the mediocre size and arm strength is really troubling. He’s the anti-Cutler. Guess I’m going to have to hope Hamlet’s intangibles thing is right on, but I have a had time seeing this guy winning games with his arm in Lambeau or Soldier Field in December.

Abbrederis is good at finding soft spots in zone, at least. He may not be the second coming of whatever white-guy receiver you like best, but I think he’ll contribute.

I think the 49ers did miss out on Desir or something, because they’ve just picked up a third cornerback today, in addition to Ward from the 1st Round.

I loved Abbredaris as a college player, but I have low expectations for him in the pros. He can’t jump, he isn’t strong, his hands are average at best and he is injury prone. He also makes complete WTF plays at times, like the Hail Mary at the end of the Ohio State game two years ago. He was put in as a DBack to break up the pass and it came right to him. He jumped about two seconds too soon and his feet were back on the ground when the ball sailed just over his hands right into the OSU receivers arms for a TD.

Well, he’d be hard pressed to do worse than Cutler against the Packers. What is Cutler? Like 1-8?

Rams got a CB EJ Gaines out of Mizzou that I 'd hoped for the 49ers, especially after not getting Desir.

And speaking of Mizzou, with only a little over a round left will Michael Sam be picked?

The Chiefs have drafted my QB boyfriend Aaron Murray and now my Canadian boyfriend Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. I may have to become a Chiefs fan (which I kinda am anyway).

And the Seahawks just drafted someone NFL.com didn’t even give a grade to. Ladies and Gentlemen, Garrett Scott.

At this point I only care about Mr. Irrelevant. How close are we?

I am getting the feeling that this Steeler draft is Kevin Colbert’s make or break draft, given the players he is choosing.

I also think that maybe this is Dick Lebeau’s last year, because they rarely talk about players starting from day one on defense, and they are talking about both 1 and 2 as possible first day starters.

I don’t like the Dre pick at #3, because they have massive needs at CB that they have ignored completely. However, if he is the kick returner/change of pace back I keep hearing about, maybe he will be a nice addition. I never thought Sproles would last as long as he did in the league, so who knows?

It seems that the Steelers are shooting very high each round, looking for guys that can play NOW. I think a few of these guys will stick on special teams as starters right away, so that is a good thing. But the defensive secondary scares the shit out of me. I can’t believe they waited until the 5th round to take a CB.

Their 4th rounder, the WR out of Clemson is intriguing, considering how tall he is, however he supposedly drops a lot of passes, so my head immediately goes to Limas Sweed. At least the Steelers didn’t waste a 2 on this guy.

Sweed was such a disappointment, the guy could get open like anything, but dropped every pass that went his way. What a waste of talent.

We haven’t had a great CB since Rod Woodson. And with Troy in his last legs, the Steelers secondary is looking bleak. Unless, of course, the signing of Mitchell (is that right?) from the Panthers solves their coverage problems for 4 positions, which I highly doubt.

I am disappointed by this draft. Their number one need on everyone’s list was corner, and they waited until the 5th? Not a recipe for success, even if they hit on some of their picks. The only way they can take pressure away from the corners is to increase the push from the front 7, and I just don’t know if what they have is enough. Teams that could throw carved up the Steelers secondary last year. And their run defense wasn’t all that great either.
I still can’t figure out why the Steelers haven’t hired me to help them draft.

Re: A.J. McCarron - i was wondering why this kid fell also, and heard on FoxSports radio that he was an absolute tool in his interviews.

I don’t know him at all, so I have no idea if this was true or not, but based on where he went, I have to think something scared off 32 teams.

Supposedly his interview in Tennessee was horrific. He told them he didn’t expect to last longer than mid second, and would have been shocked to not be taken in the first. I like confidence in my QB’s, but maybe he came off like a prick?

To me, it is hard to ignore that he is a winner. Two National Championships, and a lot of wins. But Alabama has a ton of pro talent, so it could be argued that just about any talented QB could have succeeded there.

We shall see. Maybe the draft has humbled him to the point where he is ready to work. Because everything i am now hearing makes him sound like an entitled douche-bag.

ETA: Johnny Football is going to bring excitement to the Browns. As a Steelers fan, I am not thrilled that my team will have to face him for the next decade or more (assuming he doesn’t get hurt). But I was and still am convinced that this kid is going to be a major star in the NFL, and I think the Browns got the steal of the draft.

Reminded me a bit of the Dolphins getting Marino in 1984 at the end of the 1st, and the Steelers getting Ben as the 3rd QB after Manning and Rivers.

I think the Steelers got the best QB that year, the Dolphins got the 2nd best (behind elway) and the Browns now got the best one this year.

The Jets just went back to back awesome names. Quincy Enunwa and I.K. Enemkpali.

Bears drafted a punter.

And we really need one. Actually pretty pleased with it. The history of drafted punters is actually pretty impressive, so of he plays like one of the other guys picked around this spot in previous years is a win for us.

Hopefully the guy starts and is a big upgrade over Podlesh at a fraction of the cost.

Steelers draft is done. Very happy with the results. Typical Colbert draft where every coach will have a project or two to work with. John Mitchell and Keith Butler must be doing backflips. Mitchell gets Tuitt and a 6’7" NT who wears a size 54 jacket and he still has Arnfelt and Nick Williams from last year. Butler gets Shazier (who could play safety with his speed) and Zumwalt plus he still has Jarvis Jones, Williams, Spence back from injury and Moats. Carnell Lake got a guy he likes, Munchak has a guy with position flexibility plus his returning group is still very young. I think our rebuilding phase is over; time to win again.

I still don’t really like the Archer pick but that looks like a toy for Haley more than Saxon who will be expected to keep Bell away from the sophomore slump.

Sadly, Podlesh is our upgrade. Big Ben punts better than he does on his pooch punts. :frowning:

Yeah, this was not a great move, IMO. I hope the Steelers pick up a FA punter or two to come in and push Podlesh.

Still don’t like the lack of focus on CB, but there are some interesting athletes coming in.

About a dozen picks left. Still hoping to see Michael Sam’s name come off the board, although at this point it’d arguably be better for him to get a shot at the UDFA market.

Let’s hope it isn’t a typical Colbert draft. Because I will be complaining about it next fall if it is.

And Sam goes to the Rams with the second compensatory pick in the 7th round, #249 overall. Congrats to him. It’s a nice milestone for the NFL and for society.
