2014 NFL Draft

Steelers have drafted some insane physical talents, which would be awesome if this was a Track and Field meet. This looks like a key draft for Colbert and Co: they’re trying to outsmart everyone with their picks (we have maybe 1 or 2 NFL quality CB’s on the roster, and there were like 20 NFL quality CBs in this draft, and they’ve chosen… 0…) but I do see what they’re trying to do. I just don’t know if an 8-8 team can be going all in on boom-bust prospects.

The Saints went defense again in the 4th, with OLB Khairi Fortt from CAL. I don’t know anything about him, but I was expecting them to go O-line, preferably center, since we don’t really have one at the moment…

God damn you Browns, you stole Desir. I don’t know what type of scheme the Browns will be running and I’m not convinced Desir can be a great CB in any system, but he’s an amazing fit for a Tampa 2 style team. I think he can be Peanut Tillman all over again if he’s able to strengthen up some.

Sad the Bears missed out on him and we’ll never know if they could have landed Carey later in the draft if they took him with their 4th, but I’ll be watching the Browns to see if he pans out.

The Bears still have 3 picks to get better in the secondary, time to start figuring out who else I like.

HEY! The just traded back up into the 4th to get a DB, Brock Vereen, brother of the Pats Shane Vereen. I actually looked him over in the pre-draft run up. I wonder if the Bears traded up because the got spooked by losing Desir…who knows. Anyways, I wasn’t super excited about the prospect write-ups I read on Vereen. Sounds like a another Safety who cant tackle, the Bears have plenty of those guys!

The Eagles traded Bryce Brown to the Bills. Love that move for the Bills.

That surprises me a bit. The Browns draft has been very coaching influenced - the top pick of Gilmore is a classic Pettine pick. He needs two great man cover guys to run his defense. Gilmore is notably a bad zone CB, at least with cloud coverage, because he can’t take on blockers and can’t tackle. But in Pettine’s scheme, the corners are man coverage above all else. Similarly, they took Kirksey over Borland because the scheme called for a fast, coverage ILB and not a thumper.

So either they think Desir can work in their scheme or it was just a straight BPA pick, but they’re definitely not running a cover 2 style defense very much.

I wonder if the 49ers were hoping for Desir, because two picks after the Browns stole him, they pick Dontae Johnson, who’s 6’2" with 4.45 speed. Nice consolation prize, methinks.

Lions get a short, fast CB and tall, skinny, fast DE in the 4th. Gonna have to look these guys up.

Maybe they like him as a Nickel or think he can convert to a FS. Then again it’s probably just a straight up BPA move like you mentioned. Maybe wiith a couple years of seasoning they think he can become a bump and run guy, he’s got the size and bunch of untapped potential.

Savage to the Texans. Very interesting, well played by the Texans. I like him much better than Mettenberger and McCarron. They didn’t overdraft him and while he may bust out, they got good value.

They need a more reliable starter from somewhere so Savage can learn, but I’d have loved him as a low risk developmental guy on my team.

As happy as I am about the first two picks I really would rather have seen a corner over Archer. They’ve been trying and failing for years to make that kind of pick work (seems to be high on Haley’s wish list). They obviously plan to play a lot of heavy nickel on passing downs but now they will probably have to sign someone else’s roster cuts after the draft to have enough corners. I suppose all the corners available after the second round would have been raw anyway but it seems like they need more bodies there. They supposedly lost interest in Terry Hawthorne after last year but he had a strong camp. I’d like to see them give a guy like that another invite and see if he can work his way back. Carnell Lake pushed pretty hard for him at the time.

Damn it, the Lions just added Caraun Reid. Great pickup for them and I hate that they have another DT for us to worry about.

In the 6th I hope the Bears think about a Center or a ILB.

Marcel Jensen is an interesting option as a second TE.

There’s a couple meathead Mike LBs left on the board in Skov and Bullough, both were productive but terrible athletically. In the traditional Tampa 2 they are complete stay-aways, but I don’t know what Mel Tucker has in mind for this season yet.

A more athletic LB option is Christian Jones, but he’s a tweener without a clear position.

Jonathan Dowling is a interesting SS option out of Western Kentucky. Top ranked guy on the board at the position and the Bears are no where close to settled at that position.

Antone Exum is worth a look at CB, he might be able to play FS and Nickel. Might be a head case.

Lots of flawed OLs left on the board and I haven’t a clue which are hidden gems. DEefinitely would like to see the Bears grab some more depth at any of the positions, especially Center.

AJ McCarron goes to the Bengals. I don’t see that being an improvement at all. Similar players with similar flaws, and McCarron is a douchebag to boot.

Aaron Murray to the Chiefs is a fit I like a little better. Murray is a really limited player but he actually fits the Reid WCO pretty well. I don’t expect him to be much of a starter, but could be a long term #2.

Jeff Matthews is a really interesting developmental QB option for the Bears.

Omni-Why is McCarron a douche? Take it you’re an Auburn fan.

Probably because of his chest tattoo.

Nope, apparently in NFL interviews he was all about making excuses and pointing the finger at teammates and coaches. YMMV.

I read that, too. Rubbed execs the wrong way.

Abbrederis AND Adams for Aaron Rogers to pass to? He must have just fainted.

Packers fans are going to swoon over Abbrederis. It’s going to be ridiculous. Half of Wisconsin is off furiously masturbating with their Badgers jersey into their Cheesehead hat right now.

Hate to break it to them, Abbrederis is not Jordy Nelson 2.0.

Fuck, Exum went to the Vikings. Hopefully he’s that injury prone undisciplined guy the scouting reports described and not the ball stripping, press-man thumper.

Didn’t read the interviews, but if that’s true, yeah he’s a schmuck.
