2015 Golden Globes watchalong thread

I would’ve gone with House of Cards, though I haven’t seen the Affair.

I also thought he was hilarious. They need to let him host again.

Those drama series actor nominees were a super intense bunch.

George Clooney has not changed a bit in 20 years has he???

Harrison Ford is drunk. Or has bad heartburn.

It seems he’s always drunk at these things.

It was great to see Michael Douglas… errr… Michael Keaton win. His speech was genuine & touching when he began talking about his son.

Cool, Grand Budapest Hotel won! It deserved it, hands down. Fun and (dare I say it?) delightful. Perfectly choreographed blocking and comedy, and the visuals felt like watching a living diorama.

I hope Equipoise is going to let us know who shoulda won all these movie awards  I’ve only seen Grand Budapest.

Yay! Stephen Hawking won!

I usually do my prep-watching for the Oscars. The Globes come too close to Christmas for me to be prepared properly. I’ve seen next to nothing, but I’ll be in good shape in 2 months.

And I don’t think it’s cool that Keaton, however good his speech was, got to go on and on and Eddie gets cut off quickly. I know it’s at the end and they’re ruder and all, but it’s so tacky to have such a wide margin of speech allowances.

I just got home and got to see the last few awards. I’m very happy with Grand Budapest Hotel winning Musical or Comedy (and I’m sure that Wes Anderson was reading real names of HFPA members, because one of the names he read was my friend!).

I’m very happy with Boyhood winning Best Motion Picture, Drama and I think (hope) it goes on to win the Oscar. I haven’t seen Julianne Moore’s movie yet, but I’m happy with her winning Best Actress, Drama and I’m sure she’s going to win the Oscar too. I’ve always hated Eddie Redmayne but he was pretty good in The Theory of Everything. His winning Best Actor, Drama was a surprise. I was rooting for Jake but I’m not unhappy. I still think Michael Keaton will win the Oscar. I’m happy for his win tonight in Best Actor, Musical or Comedy. I think Amy Adams’ win for Best Actress, Musical or Comedy was a surprise, but a nice one. She elevated that movie. She won’t be nominated for an Oscar. I don’t think. Maybe. You never know.

Other winners I didn’t see.

Best Director, Motion Picture: Richard Linklater, Boyhood (very happy, but I liked all the nominees. I think he’ll win the Oscar too)

Best Supporting Actress: Patricia Arquette for Boyhood (happy, and she’ll definitely win the Oscar too)

Best Supporting Actor: J. K. Simmons for Whiplash (I hated Whiplash but he was great in it and deserves any awards he gets, partly because he was great in Whiplash, but mostly because he’s J. K. Simmons. He’ll also win the Oscar. Hand’s down, not even close, bet a lot of money now before your friends wise up.)

Best Screenplay: Alejandro G. Iñárritu for Birdman (happy, but any of them would have been fine by me. The Globes don’t split Screenplay into Original and Adapted the way the Oscars do. He could win the Oscar for Original and someone else could win for Adapted. Or not. He’ll be up against Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel, tough tough competition. I’ll be happy no matter who wins the Oscar.)

Best Foreign-Language Film: Leviathan (I’ll be seeing it tomorrow night. At least Ida didn’t win.)

Best Animated Feature Film: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (I liked all the nominees but was pulling for The LEGO Movie, which I think will win the Oscar, but what do I know?)

Best Original Score, Motion Picture: Jóhann Jóhannsson, The Theory of Everything (no opinion here. I rarely pay attention to a movie’s Score unless it’s an important part of the movie’s atmosphere, like Mica Levi’s score for Under The Skin, which wasn’t nominated, so I don’t care. I care about music, all music is good, but I didn’t have a dog in the fight so any of the nominees could have won and I say “Congratulations!” though it’s always surreal and wonderful to hear Trent Reznor’s name invoked at an awards ceremony so I guess I was pulling for him. Or would have been pulling, if I’d been watching.)

Best Original Song, Motion Picture: ”Glory” by John Legend and Common, from Selma (again, no dog in the fight so no real opinion other than, I’m glad Selma won something. I do like that Patti Smith, Lorde, Sia and Lana Del Rey were nominees even if I can’t remember the songs at all.)

I did pretty poorly in my predictions tonight, only got 10 correct. Shoulda gone with my gut for a bunch of them but I let those experts at Gold Derby sway me wrong!

I was really rooting for “Birdman” to win Best Comedy, as it was my favorite film of the year, haven’t seen “Grand Budapest” yet so can’t comment on that. Glad Michael Keaton won though.

Kevin Spacey YES!! Finally!!

And I am SO SO THRILLED AND SHOCKED that Joanne Froggatt won Best Supporting TV Actress!! I was really rooting for her but everywhere I read had her at like 0% chance of winning!

I now really want to see “Boyhood”, “Pride”, “Grand Budapest Hotel” & “Selma”!

Grand Budapest Hotel was the best, most fun, movie I’d seen in 2014. And I like Wes Anderson movies a lot.

Boyhood will win best picture. No doubt.

Birdman - as good a film as it is - will get iced.

Wow. That’s a suprise. I liked both films but preferred HTTYD. Still, I reckon “The Academy” will go with LEGO.

I absolutely look forward to seeing Leviathan!

Was really happy to see Grand Budapest Hotel win, and Wes Anderson’s speech was hilarious (and very Wes Anderson-y). Was surprised that Boyhood won it over Selma - I haven’t seen either yet, but with all the buzz, I was thinking Selma was going to do far better.

They always complain about these shows running long but they don’t think to cut any of the commercials, especially the NBC promotional stuff. They could do away with that without a problem.

I’m in St. Petersburg, Russia, and that film might open in February. Perhaps.

Equipoise Did you like “Deux jours, une nuit”, “Two days, one Night” - or as it’s called here in Russia, “Два дня, одна ночь” Nice, long takes. Marion Cotillard is terrific.

It hasn’t opened in Chicago yet. I hope to see it next week.

I did see Leviathan and Predestination and both were very very very good! It was an interesting double-feature. I’m very proud of the HFPA for choosing Leviathan. I need to look up to see where it was filmed. The scenery was spectacular!
