Official Golden Globes thread

If there is already one of these, please forgive me. Awards season is to me like the playoffs are for boys. Critics choice and Golden Globes are the playoffs, and the Academy Awards is the Superbowl.

I’m waiting to see who Aniston/Pitt show up with on the red carpet. The question is, should I watch Star Jones coverage or Joan Rivers? I think Star is the way to go.

If the critics choice was any indicator, Sideways should take it all, but Jamie Foxx with get best actor. Although, it looks to me like Don Cheadle might have a chance as well. But I think Jamie will get it because of the hype.

I’m guessing Hilary Swank, best actresss, Jamie Foxx, best actor, Sideways best movie.

=============================

I’ve seen all of those movies except for Beyond the Sea (which I’ll be seeing on Tuesday), Love Song for Bobby Long (which hasn’t opened here yet), Bridget Jones (it didn’t interest me) and The Chorus (I don’t think it’s opened yet. If it did, I’m sorry I missed it), and my predictions are marked with a *.

For the most part, I don’t really care who wins what. I’m not dismissing the Globes, it’s just that with the exception of actively pulling for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (my favorite film of 2004), I’m not anywhere near as emotionally invested in Awards season this year as I have been the last 3 years. I think all the movies are good so I’d be happy with just about any win (well, maybe not Zellweger, but then, I haven’t seen her performance). I’d be thrilled with anything Eternal Sunshine might get but beyond that, it’s all good.

As scorned as they are in certain quarters, the Globes, for at least the past several years, almost always “get it right” or close to, both in nominations and wins. I would like to have seen them recognize Nicole Kidman’s performance in Dogville, but I can’t complain too much since they did recognize her performance in Birth. It’ll be a good show.

I can’t believe De-Lovely is nominated so much, I thought it was terrible. I had to turn it off halfway through.

Also, I forgot how the Golden Globes has so many categories. That way everyone who is “supposed” to win, can.

Still, I’m a geek for awards shows and I will watch everything from the red carpet to the closing credits.

I meant to expand the song and score nominees. From the Globes web site:

Score nominees:

CLINT EASTWOOD - MILLION DOLLAR BABY
JAN A.P. KACZMAREK - FINDING NEVERLAND
ROLFE KENT - SIDEWAYS
HOWARD SHORE - THE AVIATOR
HANS ZIMMER - SPANGLISH

Except for the “framing” elements (Porter watching his life as a play), I thought the movie was decent. The acting was all good, the production values were excellent and the music, of course, was brilliant. The script didn’t quite gell for me, but I thought it was touching and interesting. It’s on DVD already?

Same here. I’ve been an Awards geek since I was a kid. I would LOVE to have a cable channel just devoted to movie awards. I’d love to be able to watch old Academy Awards shows.

That would be awesome! Who do we call to set it up?

Thank you for letting me know that I’m not the only one who’d be interested! I wish I could make it so. I doubt AMPAS would participate in such a thing, especially if they had to share time with the nose-in-air, sniff “lesser” award shows. They’re pretty stingy with their clips even. I would love it though. I’ve only missed 2 Academy Awards shows in my life (at least, as long as I can remember, sitting in front of the TV with popcorn) and I’ve love to see those, plus the ones that happened before I was old enough to remember. Even before the show was televised on TV, they had to have filmed them. How else would they have all those clips, like Hattie McDaniel accepting her award for Best Supporting Actress for Gone With The Wind?

I have to go away for several hours. I’ll miss most of the red carpet stuff, but I set my Tivo to catch everything, even E!'s 6-hour pre-rc coverage. If anything interesting happens, I’d be most greatful if someone could make note of it, and approximately how far into the coverage it happened, so I can fast-forward to it. Please? Thank you in advance.

My guesses highlighted with an asterisk. I’ve only seen a few of these movies, but I read a lot of People and watch a lot of E.

I thought so, too. At least, I’m not surprised about the acting noms – Kline and Judd were both excellent.

So far, the only fashion faux pas is Kathy Griffin. OMG, her dress is the color of something that might come out of a baby’s diaper after a really bad episode with some strained grean beans. That poor thing, after all her plastic surgery, one would think she’d *at least * look decent.

Mekhi Pheifer–yum
Christine Lahti–gorgeous
Glenn Close–breathtaking
Joely Richardson–classic and amazing

More reports to come.

Anyone know when Ewan McGregor’s presenting?

I’m tickled pink that Ian MacShane won for Deadwood. No false humility in his thank you speech – he knew he deserved it. (Not saying the other guys didn’t deserve it too, but MacShane’s work was exceptional.)

Mariska Hargitay – ! Gorgeous woman, beautiful dress – could have used a couple of band-aids though.

Equipoise, at about 38 minutes in, look for Meryl Streep’s greeting to Natalie Portman in the audience.

Agreed. I was also hoping she could have thanked Jerry Orbach.
Oooh, Goran Visnjic!!!

Part of me wishes that the Golden Globes award went to the nicest set of boobies in the movies.

I won’t say which part.

Btw, anyone else thought it amusing that two of the 5 nominees for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy used to work together in “A Living Color”? Who could have imagined that watching that show that TWO of those actors would be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actor in the same year?

Anyone else surprised to see The Aviator win Best Drama? Judging on hype alone, I would have picked Million Dollar Baby. I have seen them both, by the way, and while I liked both of them, I prefered Ray to either one. I am really eager to see Sideways now.

I don’t watch many movies or TV shows, so the only thing I’m really interested in is Eternal Sunshine.

Here’s what I want to know: Eternal Sunshine is a comedy? What? Is it just me or does that really not make any sense?

Also, is there actually such a thing as a “Musical TV Series”? I’d love to see one…

Cop Rock?

Oh, and Eternal Sunshine didn’t win Best Screenplay or anything else tonight, but I was really pulling for it. I’m just happy for William Shatner and Jason Bateman, and here’s hoping Eternal Sunshine fares better at the Oscars.

So one DOES exist! Or did. I was about 2 years old when that show came out, and I’ve never heard of it until now. Now I must figure out where I can find the show… Thank you!

(And now back to your Golden Globes discussion.)
