A shambles. Three ducks and a 1. Can you imagine the reception they’ll get going home. They may want to apply for asylum while they’re here … I’m sure they’ll love it in Cambodia
Well there is etiquette about kicking a man when they are down … but it doesn’t apply to the Poms.
Drop 'em to associate status and promote Scotland and Ireland I say.
During the match, I was emailing amongst a group of 4 of my friends - two of us are members at Surrey CCC, another goes regularly to Sussex, we try and get along to a couple of days of Test cricket and an ODI a year. We are cricket people and supporters of the English game. And we were actively cheering on the Bangladesh side. This tells you everything you need to know about what we (at least the 4 of us) think of the state of the ODI game in England.
Fantastic result - if England sack their management, selectors, statisticians and others who input to the tactical side of the game, and rebuild the side around the 4 or 5 of them that are likely to be decent ODI cricketers, then truly everyone will be a winner out of this game. The World Cup is better off without us in it (as we’re not interesting to watch - bat with no elan, bowl with no mystery), Bangladesh deserves an opportunity to further grow their game and we can all rest easy that the remaining games may actually be competitive.
My only concern is that the ECB won’t see the writing on the wall. We may have to lose to Afghanistan as well. I’ll be cheering for that result.
Its ok lads. Its not like you invented the game?
Or every country in the competition!
Someone tweeted a picture of England with the caption “European Champions!”
Ireland are surely?
Cricket Japan and Malaysia cricket are both trying to schedule games with England.
Cumbrian, fair enough, how can you not support a team who bowls a 19-year old at the death and whose captain is held together by yards of sticky tape (but still bowls a full 10 overs, and stays on the field throughout because that’s his duty)?
I heard the news today, oh boy…
I thought England were sure to win and went to bed when they were only six down and didn’t need very many.
Maybe not out of the Six Nations, but they came out ahead of Germany
Well they’ve won three times as many ICC world cup games as England and Scotland combined…
Not looking like winning this one though, as India’s bowlers strangle the Irish after a promising start.
I just watched an interview with Paul Downton who is the top something or other of the English Cricket Board.
The reason we did so badly was because the players played badly.
The reason the players played so badly is their lack of experience in T20 cricket.
Again, this is not the fault of the ECB. It’s all the players’ fault.
Um, should have someone pointed out that ECB forbids most of the current England squad playing in the IPL, or pretty much any T20?
Really? Why? God knows there are problems having Indian money running cricket, but from a Kiwi perspective, having players in the IPL has honed not just their short game skills but their whole attitude.
I think the ECB don’t want the cream of their players unavailable from April to May.
Speaking of India, they looked very strong in their demolition of Ireland. I certainly didn’t expect them to bowl out all their opponents in the group stages. It’ll take a hell of a performance to beat them.
found this dreamy video of Bangla fans celebrating -
the accent, the facial expressions, the high-fives, and then a couple of white guys also join in the celebrations…so hilarious.
Feel good for the Bangbros. Hope for a one-sided Indian victory in the quarters though.
There are a lot of improvements that should be made in the IPL IMO (more teams, more foreign players etc) and there have been a couple of blots like spot fixing by a few players, betting by a couple of team owners etc (which will be taken care of in future I think). The league is quite competitive and popular (atleast in Indian subcontinent) though -

Meanwhile, Scotland have done well to restrict Sri Lanka to a mere 364 (inc another century for Sangakkara, who has more centuries in this World Cup than the whole England team). In response, Scotland are cruising nicely at 133/3.
You feel for them, really. They’ve no hope of actually reaching the target, and the more they tried to match the required run-rate the quicker they’d get out. So they have to play steadily and aim for a respectable score: a professional and responsible approach, but going out and not even considering a win has to abrade the soul a little. Still, if they lose by less than 100 I think they can be proud, considering.
South Africa did about the same to UAE last night.
Two games today, NZ v Bangladesh, a Bangladeshi win would lift them up above Sri Lanka and thereby avoid India in the quarters, so there’s plenty for them to play for. It’s not entirely out of the question either - Bangladesh has beaten New Zealand the last seven times they’ve met (albeit all of them home games). So an upset could be on the cards.
The second game sees England play Afghanistan. Surely the English can’t lose this one as well?
Pulling for Afghanistan to finish off England. Wouldn’t mind Bangladesh knocking over NZ either. Didn’t look very promising as they limped to 8/1 off the first seven overs but have added 64/1 off the next seven.
Bangladesh post 288 for 7, becoming the first team to bat the full 50 against NZ. Another good century from Mahmudullah. Should be a good chase to watch.
Afghanistan need a similar innings if they are to recover from 24 for 2 against England.
