2016 Omnibus Golf Thread

I don’t see a golf thread yet for 2016. Here’s a thread to discuss the PGA, LPGA, and Champions tours for 2016. I imagine we will do separate threads for the majors.

I’m really hoping Phil pulls off a win at Pebble Beach. There’s nothing better than watching Pebble Beach while I’m stuck inside on a cold snowy February afternoon. Make up for the meltdown in San Diego.

Phil couldn’t get it done, but his swing looks better than it has in years and he putted really well this week. I look for him to get a win this year, and he should definitely be contending at Augusta.

At least on the first 71 holes…

Someone else who couldn’t finish the job: Ray Romano, whose team I think had the lead after 54; they shot a 72…but Vaughn Taylor and Gregg Ontiveros (CEO of Group O) shot a 62 to win by a stroke.

Golf can be a streaky sport but I can’t believe Jordan Spieth had 8 bogeys today and is at 6 over. Wow!

you forgot the Double bogey on #18. He shot 79 (+8) at the par 71 Riviera.

A truly awful round of golf. http://www.pgatour.com/news/2016/02/190/a-day-to-forget.html?cid=FBPGATOUR

Biggest Tournament of the year, thus far, is this week in Miami.

Top 3 players in the rankings, Jordan, Jason, Rory are paired together in Rounds 1 & 2. All three have less than stellar results since Jordan won the tournament of Champions in the first week.

Each of them have missed a cut in their last two tournaments. Jason at San Diego, Jordan in Los Angeles, and Rory last week in Honda.

Smart money is on someone who hits the ball a long way.

Do we know who will be in the Olympics for golf this year and what tournaments, if any, will be impacted?

The Olympic participants will be determined by the July 11 OWGR (Men) and Rolex (Womens) Rankings.

60 players are exempt. Up to two from each country unless they are in the top 15, where the # of participants are capped at 4. Brazil gets their highest ranked player on both Mens and Womens side, no matter where they are ranked.

Right now, USA would have 4 players (Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson) because they are all in the Top 15. Players like Patrick Reed and Jim Furyk who are in the top 15, won’t be invited despite being in the top 15 because there are 4 US players ranked ahead of them.

USA only has three female players in the top 15 of the US Rankings (Lexi Thompson, Stacy Lewis and Cristie Kerr). Korea has 7 players in the top 15 but only the top 4 will get to play in the Olympics.

Haven’t had a chance to see any of the lowlights, but Spieth looks like he’s had another awful round with a 5 over yesterday. What’s gotten into him? The crazy early season travel schedule?

If there was any doubt, Tiger will not be playing the Masters.

Which is next week, by the way.

My guess is that this is the end of any realistic chance he can pass - or even equal - Jack’s 18 major titles. Not so much missing a major tournament as the reason for that: he’s now 40 with a body that simply isn’t in shape to play tournament golf, let alone to contend for the win.

He collected his 14 major titles over 12 years (1997 - 2008). He’d need to start winning them again at about that rate to reach 18 or 19 in the time he (optimistically) has left. I’d say the chance of this is now below 1%.

I’d be extremely happy to be proved wrong.

Muirfield votes to not allow female members. Thus, they’re out of the running to host the Open Championship. The vote was close, 64% and 66% was needed. I assume they’ll have another vote in the future and get enough support to admit women.

CEO charged with insider trading is linked to giving a tip to Lefty.

Can Golf magazine sink any lower? I’ve seen a pro-Trump article today as well as a sexist as Hell, “LPGA Tour Beauties”!article.

Phil Mickelson with an opening round 63 at The Open Championship. Almost perfect condition for the first round. It’s Phil’s tournament to lose now. Can he avoid a disaster round?

Damn, I feel for the poor guy. Probably his single greatest tournament ever, and he has to settle for second because someone else happened to be from a different planet that week. And this after Tiger Woods has eaten his lunch how many times??

Heh, Jack fans think he had to battle Arnie and Lee down the stretch every time he won, and now this generation is doing it with Tiger.

The answer is, once. That’s how many times Phil finished second to Tiger in a major.

You are aware that if you fail to provide any specifics, I’m only going to ask more questions, right?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a golfer with a higher second-to-first ratio than Mickelson. Sure, Greg Norman was hopelessly snakebitten at majors (seriously, this was The Curse of the Bambino multiplied by four), but he made up for it everywhere else. Mickelson, it always seems like there’s someone better. Of course Woods is going to be the most obvious example because for a pretty long stretch he was better than everyone, but he had company.

Aside: Was this an easy course or what? I remember, not very long ago, when +5 won the British Open. Of course, that was one no one with a soul could ever forget.

In terms of dominance against the field, it can be argued that Stenson’s win was more dominant that Woods win in the 2000 US Open.

In terms of Winning Score against the field average, Stenson winning score tops Woods’ score in the 2000 US Open.

The 81 players that made the cut averaged 288.45 and Stenson’s 264 was 24.45 shots better than that.

In the 2000 US Open, Woods was 24.08 better than the field average.

Next best in major, was Ray Floyd win in the 1976 Masters at 21.74

In terms of Z-Score, Woods 2000 US Open was the best at 4.12. Stenson was next best at 3.50. Nicklaus’ win in the 1965 Masters was 3rd at 3.48.
