2016 Oscar Watch-along thread (includes nominations and show order)

Gena Rowlands

Debbie Reynolds

and Spike Lee got Special Oscar awards.

Chi-Raq, like a lot of Spike’s films, was a weird mixture of excellent and cringe-inducing.

In memoriam… Mentioning the ones that I will miss the most

Omar Shariff

Christopher Lee :frowning:

Alan Rickman

David Bowie

Leonard Nimoy :frowning:

That was almost entirely free of the annoying popularity contest of people applauding. Thanks to the director for that choice.

Chi-raq was brilliant.

I liked that In Memorium. If you let people clap during the segment it becomes a popularity contest.

Did they disable the microphones so that we couldn’t hear the applause? The only one I heard it for was Alan Rickman.

They stopped doing that a few years ago. It had to’ve been pretty embarrassing for the families and loved ones of the lesser-known ones to have the more famous ones get a ton of applause, and THEIR loved one get almost none–the equivalent of everyone asking, “who?”

Anyway, as pleased as I am to see a Beatles song (one of their best, at that) during the In Memoriam segment, it seems a little odd that they didn’t pick a James Horner piece, given that he’d died this year.

Best live action short film.

Best Foreign Language Film.

Song of Saul from Hungary.

Playing Joe Biden on with the Indiana Jones theme?

Jeez, give the guy a swelled head, why don’t you?

(J/K. I like the “least qualified man in the room” joke he made. And ESPECIALLY the content of his speech.)

wtf is going on right now

Wow that Joe Biden thing was random. I dig.

Joe Biden presenting one of the songs.

One mistake as one of the handlers appeared in the frame with Lady Gaga. Managed to jump off before the song started.

I liked that they used the Zoolander clip for Bowie. There was plenty to choose from - The Man Who Fell To Earth, The Hunger, Labyrinth - but they went with Zoolander. Nice!

Joe Biden introducing Lady Gaga. Huh.

Oh her song is from the documentary The Hunting Grounds which is an expose of on-campus sexual assault. Now we know.

The sequel is in the theaters at the moment.

Why does ABC even pretend this show goes only 3 hours?

I’ll point out that Mad Max is using new live sounds, new live editing whereas SW:TFA is using stored sounds that have been available for years. Editing live stunts too. So it’s easier (maybe) to vote for something new over something we’ve seen and heard.

She’s been raped herself, so no wonder she seemed to be fighting back tears at certain points during the song. That was a pretty moving moment.
