2016 Oscar Watch-along thread (includes nominations and show order)

Is Leo holding dip in his lip? Noticed the weirdness in pre show too.

Agree, he deserved the nom.

I figured Inarratu would win, but I still had my fingers crossed for Miller.

Maybe Leo is just sleeping and dreaming all of this…

.

Spotlight!

The Catholic church is not gonna like this… (Where is an evil smilie?) I still think Pope Benedict did call it quits because of this.

Wow! That’s an upset! It didn’t win anything else tonight, right?

I’m sure there will be a lot of misses is the “guess the winners” pools. I was surprised.

Maybe. Him and Johnny Depp are two of the biggest nicotine addicts in Hollywood.

Two Best Pictures in a row starring Michael Keaton.
It’s ALL Keaton!

“Spotlight”,the historical film that shows how reporters and the media USED to do their job. Before the 'net and cable networks destroyed it.

It won Best Original Screenplay.

I was pulling for The Big Short, but I actually (kinda) called Spotlight as winning back in November!

Since it’s getting near to awards season and I’m a die-hard awards geek, I will confidently predict that it will definitely be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, along with several other nominations (probably Director, screenplay at least, and maybe Keaton or Ruffalo in Supporting). It might even win Best Picture. I would not be at all surprised.

WHOO HOOOOOO!! Locrian wins the Oscar pool / Locrian wins the Oscar pool (Sing with me, dammit) $100 gift card!!

I MUST thank the academy for agreeing with my choices… I-- I didn’t prepare a speech, but global warming is real, movies are fun, stay in drugs and don’t do vegetables!

Obviously, they can’t include everyone but… snubbing Tessio? To the mattresses!

I liked Joy, but then, I’m a hopeless Jennifer Lawrence fangirl. It’s the 3rd collaboration between David O. Russell and Lawrence (the other two were Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle) and 3rd time he’s directed her to an Oscar nomination (her 4th Oscar nomination overall). She of course won for Silver Linings Playbook.

Here are the final winners.

Bear Story

Finally got to a computer. Did anyone else notice them playing “What’s Love Got To Do With It” (Tina Turner’s hit song) when Whoopie Goldberg was up? Do all black women look alike or am I missing some other connection there?

Delighted that Mark Rylance won. Any of the best supporting actor nominees were equally deserving.

*Stutterer *was a very nice movie. It was the only nominated live action short that wasn’t a political piece, which made my daughter and me both think it likely wouldn’t win, as it wasn’t as “important” as the other shorts.

Didn’t see the show but jeez, that’s a lot of awards for Mad Max.

I think the music was basically random. I couldn’t detect any themes or connections to the presenters, for the most part - although I did notice they played “Rehab” after Amy won for Best Documentary.

And then “Ride of the Valkyries” was the standard play-em-off tune for the night …

Mad Max was robbed for best score. It is one of the best scores of the last 5 years. Still, I guess they went with lifetime achievement.
I’m still stunned Spotlight won. One of the only nominees I have not seen.

Unless you just won for best director, then you can keep talking until the band just says “fuck it”

I’m happy that Spotlight pulled the upset for BP. I recognize The Revenant as a masterful achievement in epic-scale moviemaking, and DiCaprio’s award was deserved, but I just don’t appreciate vengeance stories, really.

Really happy that Mad Max wasn’t dismissed as a summer popcorn movie and received a lot of praise. As I said earlier, I was hopeful after the early awards that it would turn into an Oscar for Miller’s direction but I guess it was not to be.

I didn’t care for Sam Smith’s song when I saw Spectre in the theater and was mildly surprised when it was even nominated. To have it beat out Gaga’s “Till it Happens to You” was shock - amplified by her incredibly powerful performance last night. If all the voters had seen that performance first it wouldn’t have even been close. That was a disappointing choice.

Supporting actor was a tough category, but little Jacob Tremblay should have been in the mix.

Really underwhelmed by Chris Rock. I appreciate acknowledging the lack of racial diversity (although we did see Chileans, Italians and Mexicans winning awards), and even applaud taking the Academy to task a little bit. But making the whole show about it was grating. And very few of his jokes were actually funny.

I appreciated the attempt to move things along by including the scrolling thank-you notes, but it was really annoying. It felt like I was watching CNN. Worthy experiment but it didn’t work.

My kids liked the minions, Star Wars droids and Buzz & Lightyear appearances - all of which came after Sarah Silverman’s wildly inappropriate commentary. I like Sarah but her choice of humor was very in appropriate for that time and place - save it for late night.
