They just held this over the weekend. Lots of great sand sculpting, and outrageous crowds. I rode my bicycle down, because driving in and parking were insane.
My favorite was this one by Dmitri Klimenko. It didn’t win an award, which I think is a mistake. Its use of negative space and the cutouts alone make this a standout. Another problem is that people didn’t understand it:

It’s the face of Cthulhu, with a human figure partly sculpted (the head, which looks sorta Lovecraftian) and partly implied. On the back, there’s an almost photographic image of Lovecraft surrounded by tentacles.

I had to explain to several people who and what it was. Some of them thought the portrait on the back was supposed to be Adolph Hitler. I think a lot of them missed that there were tentacles on the lower part of the Giant Head. (Although Pepper Mill, Nyarlathotep bless her, caught it right off the bat)
