I’m with the OP. I think Biden should sequester himself in a pod and not leave his house until after 3 November, and maybe not until it is to move into the White House.
The stakes are too high for Biden to get the covid now. And there is really little upside for him to make these “in person” campaign stops, much less get on the same stage with someone that could easily still be infectious. Christ, Trump may have known he had covid for the last debate and was hoping Joe might join the club. We don’t know.
The ship seems to have sailed on this, but is the COVID-19 virus aware, nowithstanding it’s airborne mode of infection, that sheets of plexiglass represent a sure-fire barrier to it’s transmission?
Setting aside any COVID-related issues for the moment:
“Undecided” (apparently) is less than 5 percent of the electorate? Debate participants can talk over each other, deflect or ignore direct questions and basically run roughshod over any debate rules, with impunity? Bah, not worth the effort. Cancel.
Come on folks, I want to feel that way too, but aren’t we supposed to be the group with the moral high ground? For whatever reason, Trump seems to insist upon self destructing as he becomes more and more shrill in his efforts to retain the crown of power. I believe if we all do our part and vote for Biden and not let the circus distract us or disenfranchise our fellows – very soon Donald J Trump will become a very sad character who has been stripped of power and will be facing criminal and civil charges on many levels for multiple crimes.
Everyone wished Trump well and a speedy recovery. He did not learn a thing from being sick and soon he will be in a world of hurt (largely of his own making). Like Joe Biden, let’s be the bigger man and feel sorry for the guy who just can’t seem to help himself. Sad. Very sad indeed.
Let us celebrate the fact that soon he will not be able to harm and kill and falsely imprison citizens with near impunity (or commute the sentences of henchmen). He will really and truly be an object of pity (of course – he would HATE that). Very Sad.
(The Very Sad should be in either the Steven Colbert or the Seth Meyers trump impersonation voice.) But really, let’s get him out and forget about him as we go forward to a better future.
In principle, I agree with you. But I don’t see principles as a suicide pact. Donald is a clear and present danger to western civilization. Even when no longer in power, he will still be a threat as he will be a tyrant in exile with command over about 30% of the population and the ability to do a lot of damage. I normally don’t wish death on anyone, but in his case I make an exception. Of course I would not condone murder, but I do wish him a humane, natural, and peaceful death.
I do understand your outrage and I do not doubt your humanity.
But that said, I believe once Trump loses the election his base will abandon him in no time flat (what someone called the “Bozo Effect”). He will be a weak loser to those who are so inclined and FOX News is already tired of him – he will have no platform to spew his insanity. I predict he will have fewer than a thousand Twitter followers in a year. (All predicated upon a Biden win of course.) What is more, he will face legal battles and most likely be institutionalized by his wife and kids who will fight over control of his paltry fortune.
Now his sincere followers ARE AND WILL BE a problem that needs monitoring. Many will drop him and forget they were ever drawn into supporting him. Trump really is self destructing as he continues to play to a smaller and smaller following. As long as Barr and McConnell are removed from power the country will be alright, but they are both more dangerous than Trump will be if he fails to achieve reelection.
I believe Barr can be prosecuted for crimes against humanity if we decide to pursue an investigation. McConnell will just be contained and mostly toothless in a minority position – making 2022 midterms VERY important! The allure of Trump will end once he has no real power; it will be the difference between watching a demolition derby – and hearing about a demolition derby.
Temporary_Name, I hope you are correct. But Donnie is different than other Republican politicians. There was no Bush cult, there was no McCain cult. You’re absolutely right that his followers are a problem. We’ve seen it play out in my own Michigan. A lot of these people have guns and a lot are going to feel empowered to use them in the event of a Biden win. These are dangerous times indeed and while I hope for the best, I fear the worst.
You and I agree more than we disagree. A week ago I still believed Trump might wise up and try to win this election, now I see not only the president, but all his minions have started to believe all their own bullshit. The conman has coned himself and he couldn’t be any more destructive to reelection efforts if he was trying. I am far more worried about the rabid right wing than Trump at this point. They are going to go underground and be harder to arrest and convict – but they will hopefully also be less bold and less likely to put their outdated ideas and evil plans into action. By-the-way, while shocked to learn about the situation in Michigan, I am very happy the Governor and her family are safe and sound. I hope the other groups learn how misguided these efforts are (which they most likely won’t), and be discouraged (which they likely will be once Fuhrer Trump is removed from office – possibly by force if he becomes too stubborn).
As for other Republicans, I voted for Bush twice and for McCain since he ran for State office a thousand years ago (against a close family friend as a matter of a fact – Jim Mack). McCain does still have a cult following in Arizona including me and we all still listen when Grant Woods (his former chief of staff) speaks or if his widow Cindy has anything to say. His cult status has survived his death, but it is much smaller now. (On the other hand, most members of my extended family hated him and wanted to burn him and Jeff Flake at the stake by the end of their political careers.) In the case of Bush, my then wife and I were strong supporters for the first term, lukewarm supporters for his second election cycle, and very reluctant supporters by the end of his second term. In other words the more we got to know him, the less we supported him.
Trump seems different now, but people are pulling away already and more will as soon as he is not The Winner they believe in. I truly believe he will be less popular than Nixon a year from now.
“The Commission on Presidential Debates on Friday canceled the second debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden after the President declined to do a virtual debate despite concerns over his Covid-19 diagnosis, a source familiar with the plans told CNN.”
And in some institution while his heirs divvy up his tiny little estate. I hope it is prison, but a mental hospital would be fine too. In either case he will have to eat lunch alone because none of the inmates (residents?) will let him sit at their table. Then, when a new person sits at his lunch table he will call it a rally.
Trump forced the second debate to be cancelled completely, because it was to have a “town hall” format, which Biden is good at and Trump is even worse at than he is in normal debating.
