Sounds like you should get it this year.
If they did that this year, it could be interpreted as “All Lives”. Might not go down so well.
Essential workers of all stripes. From doctors and nurses to grocery store employees and McDonalds employees. No contest.
Daniella Frazier. She’s the teen who video-taped the murder of George Floyd. She didn’t expect to be a civil rights hero but she is one.
In that case, I’ll pretty much say what I said there, although with a change.
If Biden is elected, he gets it, and I expect there to be quite a few E-mails to him and/or Time saying, “Thank (you / Biden) for saving 2020,” similar to what happened in 1968.
If Trump is re-elected, it almost certainly goes to some “representative” of the BLM movement; my guess is, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are named together.
Dean Winters???
It will 100% be something to do with COVID. Elections are every 4 years, they’re not that special. The BLM protestors will be old news by the fall. The virus has had more of an impact on the world than most things we’ve seen in our lifetime.
At this moment, I’m thinking CHOP (formerly CHAZ) might get it. Too soon to tell.
If it’s not Fauci, it will be Biden. As winner of the election, he’ll be the Great New Hope.
I know that they only award Nobel prizes to living persons, but I’m not sure if the same applies to Time Person of the Year. If so, it won’t be Floyd.
The producer of the Covid vaccine will not be a single person but rather a team of scientists. Nevertheless, the media like to focus on individual heroes, so the team leader would be a strong candidate if we get a vaccine this year.
That doesn’t preclude (Edit to clarify: the person who had the first confirmed case) from being newsworthy and having a great effect on the world in 2020.
Additional edit: Although I think the virus is a more likely winner than any particular patient at this point
If it is COVID-related, then I’m pretty sure it goes to “The Health Workers” in general, the same way it went to “The Ebola Fighters” in 2014. No one person stands out.
Please elaborate.
You’re right, of course - I was thinking about the first US case, for some reason.
Pangolins.
I think the Essential Workers is likely, since it’s a buzzword we didn’t really have before.
It’s only June. 6 months to make covid not the most important story. Try not to think about that too much.
…I don’t understand how Dr. Fauci could even be in the running? He hasn’t really done anything? I mean his qualification for entry here seems to be that “he is an American.” I can’t think of any reason why he would be elevated above the hundreds of other healthcare/medical professionals. Definitely George Floyd over Fauci.
And if we are talking local heroes in the fight against Covid-19 I would have to nominate the dynamic duo of Jacinda Ardern and Ashley Bloomfield. We’ve seen how Ardern has responded in a crisis before (the Mosque shootings, Whakaari eruption) but Bloomfield was a typical civil-service bureaucrat forced into the daily limelight who turned into a folk-hero, “sex-symbol”, and a hero of the nation.
Government documents released a few weeks ago revealed that New Zealand were on track to rival Italy if we didn’t lock down hard and early. We didn’t have a testing and tracking regime in place. Not enough ICU beds. So big decisions were made, we shut the country down, and now we have essentially eliminated the virus from our shores. Apart from the borders being closed we are back to normal here with no restrictions. Ardern and Bloomfield is a story about how we beat the virus in just a few months. Fauci story hasn’t finished yet, and when it does it isn’t going to be a happy ending.
Time to bump this, as NBC is showing a “Time Person of the Year” special on 12/10, although the magazine may make the actual announcement a few days earlier.
My predictions, in order of confidence:
- Biden & Harris, if for no other reason than to stick “He’s the President (and she’s the VP) as of January 20” in Trump’s face
- “The Front Line Workers” - not just health workers, but people like grocery clerks…and where would we be without truck drivers?
- George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, although BLM seems to have died down
I suspect that Trump will totally lose it when reality finally hits, and at some point after Jan 20 he will be de-Twittered for rules violations. He’ll probably end up solely on Parler.
