2020 Virtual convention thread

Man, I could almost see Obama trembling with fury at times, fury at Trump and McConnell and the rest of the traitorous enablers. I mean, he keeps it together well, but man there was some hot simmering behind his words.

Kamala did well. I loved Warren’s speech.

Yes sir understood, I was meaning to go back and edit and got distracted and forgot. I’m just glad the convention seemed better focused these last two days.

Did she? Seemed about the same as the other nominators. The nominations were all pretty short.

Harris did okay, but Obama is in a class by himself. What a tough act to follow. To hear a president speak eloquently and clearly, in forceful but measured tone is so refreshing after nearly four years of mindless tweeting from the toilet.

Agreed. A while ago (even before he was clearly the nominee), when someone disdainfully mentioned that Biden hunts, I wrote that he should flex that rural-midwestern-white-man muscle from now until November like there’s no tomorrow (because there isn’t). Hunt every day! Please!

It just occurred to me that there is at least one person who is both Black and a truck drivin’ good ol’ boy: former NBA star Karl Malone. Maybe HE should give a convention speech! (Is Charley Pride still alive?).

Nooooooooo. No rifles, no tanks, no ATVs, no pickups that go RAAAAAAR! please.

Kerry couldn’t pull off the hunting thing and he had a Bronze Star, a Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

I feel you, but Biden has always been more akin to a good ol’ boy than Kerry, differences in military experience notwithstanding.

Excellent by Obama as expected. BTW what was the background? It seems to be an essay on writing the constitution. Would like to read it if there is a link.

With Steve Bannon, Trump’s 2016 campaign chair, being arrested today on fraud charges, I wonder if tonight’s speeches are being rewritten to include references. And I wonder what Trump’s 2020 campaign officials will be charged with 4 years from now.

Amen to that.

Lantern2, I think that was an exhibit here: https://constitutioncenter.org/

Charlie pride is alive and still performing . Been married to his wife since 1956

It is the Constitution Center. He even specified at the beginning of his speech that he was in Philadelphia.

He’s a pedophile who got a 14 year old pregnant, so mayyyyyybe not.

It’s not so much that Biden needs to hunt or try to get across the image that he’s the kind of guy that “you want to have a beer with” or whatever. It’s that the convention and all its attendant videos and interviews need to represent the working-class white demographic. They need to show guys with tractor-trailers and dump trucks. They need to show guys with bulldozers, or guys talking about how much they MISS their bulldozers because they’re out of work. They need to show the guys tinkering with muscle cars in the yard or framing a little addition to their house or talking about how they WISH they could restore the old GTO they inherited from their father but they can’t because they don’t have the disposable income because of the shitty economy.

There are TONS of these guys out there and we need their votes. As I have said before, this convention needs to make up for all the rallies and stump speeches that WON’T be occurring in the Midwest because of COVID. Biden is not going to be speaking in front of huge crowds of workers. Trump IS going to because he doesn’t give a fuck about COVID because he’s an idiot. But Biden is going to miss out on that opportunity.

So what needs to make up the difference? For better or worse, the answer is - TV. (And Youtube.) This convention is a week of TV. And everyone wants to look at the TV and see themselves.

I should add, of course, that the above vocations are by no means the exclusive domain of white people. As someone who has been involved in every one of them, I can assure you, they aren’t. (This should be obvious to anyone who’s even glanced at a construction site or a truck stop or been to a car show.) But the white ones are the swing votes needed in the battleground states. We cannot fucking have Michigan and Wisconsin go to Trump again.

I don’t disagree with your overall point here, but this convention has featured an overwhelming number of “ordinary” people - of all demographics. Way more than any convention that I remember. We’ve had the woman whose father believed Trump about coronavirus and died because of it, the young woman whose mother was deported despite having lived here almost her whole life, the Mexican-American family speaking about immigration last night, the various small business owners devastated by COVID, the farmer using new green methods on his farm, and those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. There have been more. Biden was even officially nominated by a security guard he met in an elevator at the NY Times! If there’s one thing this convention has been pretty good at, it has been showcasing the voices of ordinary people alongside the usual speeches from the politicians.

In the context of the convention, what else would you want them to do?

Agreed.

And, Leaper, I wasn’t aware of Karl Malone’s sin(s) — thanks for the heads up.

Not to mention that Joe Biden’s whole political persona is working class everyman. That’s what the whole riding Amtrak every day stuff is about.

Honestly, when a candidate is running, they want as many people to hear them as possible. The more people hear you speak, the more they are likely to vote for you. I assume hes not, and hiding, because he sometimes can’t talk coherently. This does not inspire confidence in me. Do not worry, I won’t vote for his opponent. If it were Pete, or even Bernie, there wouldn’t be a problem for me.
