I can’t say that I’ve heard of even 90% of the movies listed. I don’t usually do a great job of seeing a lot of nominees, but I’m generally aware of their existence. Covid has really eaten into that this year, even though there seem to be a lot of films that are available on streaming.
I’m much more familiar with the television side of things. For comedy, I want to root for both Ted Lasso and Schitt’s Creek - I suspect Schitt’s Creek will sweep their nominations wherever they have the chance.
I have to say that while I haven’t seen many, some of the nominations for the ones I have seen aren’t bowling me over. I’ve seen Viola Davis put in much better performances than her (admittedly still excellent) one in Ma Rainey, although Boseman should be a strong contender even without any sympathy bias. I actually find Miranda a weak performer in his own show (Hamilton itself is of course stupendous). Onward and Soul were…fine. I enjoyed Chicago 7 but to be honest it’s Mark Rylance and Yahya Abdul-Mateen who stood out most in that IMO, not Cohen.
It’s really in the “Limited Series” categories that I find the strong contenders, especially the actresses. Queen’s Gambit for the series, but Anya Taylor-Joy, Cate Blanchett or Shira Haas? That’s a toughie.
No nomination for Rhea Seehorn in Saul? That seems ridiculous, although admittedly I haven’t seen everything else. It would be nice to see some awards for Ted Lasso, but I won’t hold my breath.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Mank
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Hillbilly Elegy
News of the World
The Little Things
One Night in Miami…
The Midnight Sky
Tenet
Also, not nominated for any Golden Globes, but I’ve seen some Oscar pub for the following that I’ve seen:
First Cow
Da 5 Bloods
While all entertaining enough, none of them has really blown me away. I wouldn’t say “You’ve gotta see this movie” for any of them.
I will likely see fairly soon:
Nomadland
Judas and the Black Messiah
Minari
The Father
Promising Young Woman
It is a movie by Sia where the little girl who creepy dances in all her creepy music videos plays an autistic kid. There are people who have issues with it.
Yeah, that’s a glaring omission. Not a single mention of Michaela Coel anywhere, despite her writing, producing, directing and starring in a phenomenal show. Not sure WTF happened there.
Do they do craft (cinematography, sound editing, etc) awards?
Mandalorian would probably get some of those
Glad Jane Levy got a nomination (Zoey may not be the best show, but JL is a delight) – don’t think she will win.
I haven’t seen any of them, but just based on buzz Queen’s Gambit has to be the favorite.
