2021 NFL QB Carousel Thread aka the NFL Offseason Thread

This is why I said Buzbee was not an ideal choice for anybody wanting to seriously bring allegations up.

His reputation is so bad that this thread isn’t an outlier - there are a lot of people wondering what an upjumped ambulance chaser is doing on the case, especially considering the long time rumors he is close with the McNair family.

Again, it is quite possible there is a legitimate case here, but, if so, the choice of lawyer was quite unfortunate on the part of the victims. No matter what the facts in the case, the only person who will ‘win’ either way in this sordid mess is Tony Buzbee.

More problematic in my view is that none of these accusers have filed anything with the Houston PD. This is now entirely a civil matter. No criminal cases exist, no victim has even filed a police report or been interviewed by police.

I know the entire sexual assault dynamic is fucked when you talk to the police, so I can’t say I blame them that much, but it’s a big factor when this is being tried in the court of public opinion.

Chris Simms said he’s heard that the offer was never actually made. (I don’t have a link, he said it in at least 2 different videos on youTube) He thinks it was put out by the Bears management their fans wouldn’t complain too much about having Andy Dalton as their QB

There had been some buzz in Chicago over the past few days that the Bears were freeing up cap space, not only for Dalton, but in hopes of signing former Lions WR Kenny Golladay. Nope, he signed with the Giants yesterday.

I have a lot of friends who are Bears fans, and most of them are completely fed up with the team, and GM Ryan Pace in particular, right now.

I’m not upset they didn’t get Galloway – no way they could afford him. And I’m more perplexed than upset by the Dalton signing, since they already had one mediocre veteran QB under contract.

But I’m furious about them waiving Kyle Fuller, a very good CB1 whose contract they should have found a way to extend. The contracts they handed out last year to Danny Trevathan (a mistake) and Robert Quinn (a monumental blunder) now have them stuck with those guys and needing to fill a huge hole in the secondary.

Fuller had an outstanding 2018, but the last two years he’s been neither “very good” nor a CB1. PFF graded him as the 52nd best CB last year and an even worse grade in 2019 (62.5 compared to 64). Having Mack and Hicks helps him look a lot better than he’s actually playing.

The money the Broncos are paying him is high but not insane and maybe reuniting with Vic Fangio will return him to the Pro Bowl.

I think we can probably chalk this up as an unsubstantiated rumor from Simms. He’s not a reporter and has no track record for having solid sources. Far better credentialed guys have all independently reported the offer was made. Simms is probably just fishing for clicks.

PFF player grades are hot garbage. The Bears were the #1 pass defense by pretty much every advanced metric in 2018. They slipped to being just top ten in '19 and '20 and while Fuller was all world in 2018, he was most certainly was not replacement level in those years. If he’s in the 60s that implies he doesn’t deserve a starting job in the league…which is patently absurd.

I actually am okay letting him go. He was a bit overpaid when you consider the adjusted cap. He certainly wasn’t in the top 5 or 6 overpaid players on the team though.

Josh Gordon thinks an NFL team should take advantage of his acquired wisdom and talents. Just ignore the 6 suspensions.

Suspended Josh Gordon training with hope to play in NFL again, says 'there's no quit in me')

“There’s no quit in me, at least I’m thankful for that, and knowing how to get back on track has been my strong suit.”…

"Gordon said he has a good support system with his family and good friends, including Johnny Manziel, who give him “motivation” and show him “how important these small details in life are.”

It’s certainly clear that Josh Gordon can’t quit anything.

I’m a sucker for comeback stories, but Gordon has had so many chances, and continues to run afoul of the league’s substance rules. He’s only played in 28 games over the past four seasons. Remember that monster season he had with the Browns? That’s now eight years ago. I have no doubt that he wants to play (or needs to play because he’s broke), but one wonders what he has left in the tank at this point.

Also, I just went onto Gordon’s Wikipedia page, and saw these passages, added by some cheeky editor:

Such a fool. His career earnings are reportedly just $3M and change. Nothing to sniff at of course, but if he just could lay off the weed a few months a year for 3-4 years he could have made 10 times that amount, then already have retired a year ago set for life, but he’s just too stupid and weak to do it.

I fully expect in a few years to be reading a sad human-interest story about a bankrupt and homeless Josh Gordon, probably having graduated from weed to meth, or crack.

I’m rooting for Josh Gordon to get is life together, either in the NFL or otherwise. When he was with the Patriots it sounded like he was a good guy with deeply embedded demons (unlike the execrable Antonio Brown).

Addiction is a serious issue beyond being “stupid and weak.”

You’re right. I apologize.

Josh Gordon is a guy with a disease that had so much potential but couldn’t capitalize. I can’t judge someone with those kind of demons.

Are we 100% confident that his issues to date have been limited to weed? I’ve always been under the presumption that his problems go way deeper than just weed already. Considering the recent changes to local laws about recreational weed use and even the NFL’s softening on weed testing policies it strikes me as bizarre to basically blackball him to such a degree for simply a bad weed habit.

And while I agree that we shouldn’t vilify people for addiction issues, they should be treated like the illness that they are, not every self-destructive habit is an illness. Plenty of players are chronically lazy, late, overweight and partying too much. Maybe some have an eating disorder, some have depression, some are addicted to booze and weed…but let’s be real, some of them are just immature and selfish.

Gordon has been in the program enough times and has suffered enough negative consequences that he would qualify for any reasonable definition of addiction…but I’m not going to give everyone a pass. Some are just stupid and lazy.

I’m 100% confident they’re not.

“The league suspended Gordon indefinitely in December 2019 for violations of its policies on substances of abuse and performance-enhancing substances.”

Weed is not a performance-enhancing drug in the NFL.

I’ll keep looking for a better source but it looks like Dan Snyder is buying out the minority owners of the WFT. https://twitter.com/tydunne/status/1374707675104219142?s=21

What does this mean? Not sure, maybe it makes it easier for a sale down the line?

This is tangentially related to NFL issues, but a Massachusetts high school football team is drawing unwanted attention for using offensive language in play-calling.

It’s disappointing that the story lacks context. What plays displayed insensitive labels, and why? Did the coach call for a “blitzkrieg” instead of just a blitz? Was “Kristallnacht” a designed play to “break up” a pass?

Inquiring minds wanna know.

*another source indicates that “rabbi” and “dreidel” were terms used for audibles.
