2021 NFL QB Carousel Thread aka the NFL Offseason Thread

The realist in me knows nothing is going to happen.

The Bears Fan in me is refreshing sports news every five minutes.

The odds of Seattle trading Wilson at all are extremely low, considering the $39 million dead cap hit they’d take this season. The odds of them trading him to the Bears – who have no decent QB to offer back and a not-very-attractive draft position – are microscopic.

I’d prefer DeShaun Watson, anyway. :upside_down_face:

I too would much rather have the younger Watson if I’m going to give up a King’s ransom. But Wilson is better right now and certainly more accomplished, so it feels weird to not be excited about these rumors. I’d be happiest if we just figured out how to draft a superstar QB but that seems like a near impossibility at this point.

Ain’t gonna happen this year, unless we hit the lottery with a second rounder like (haha) Russell Wilson. And even with high first rounders, only about one in three QBs become stars.

I’m aware, unfortunately.

Honestly, I just don’t trust the Bears to develop a QB. A proven QB that Nagy would (hopefully) listen to would make the Bears a powerhouse.

What it is, is Wilson having a baseball agent who doesn’t know the NFL very well and is saying stupid things that are generating crazy rumors.

Cam Newton staying with the Patriots. Definitely not a move I expected. Report: Cam Newton re-signing with Patriots - ProFootballTalk

That is surprising, but only if they don’t make any other QB moves, which I suspect they will. Going into the season with just the 3 QBs they have now would be pretty shocking.

Cam Newton had a salary just south of $2 million last season. While he didn’t have the best stats of any QB (or his own a few years back), compared to his price tag, he was a spectacular value for the money.

As long as his contract isn’t much more than that, they can afford him AND competition. Heck, even at double that much, he’d be a solid QB value. And if returns to some semblance of his previous form, he’d almost have the same value proposition as a stud 1st round pick on his first contract.

Considering the cap woes a lot of teams are going to have, this is an absolutely defensible and intelligent move. At worst, the Patriots are out a small amount of money (for a QB) and at best they have a solid to excellent starting option for the year.

Solid to excellent? Did you watch any Patriots games last season?

Belichick’s only goal for the future is to prove that he’s the reason for the Pats 20 year run, not that pretty boy down in Florida. He will continue to sign barely-adequate-at-best QBs until he wins another Super Bowl or gets shown the door.

Yeah, and he had a bad season. Maybe he’s done.

If so, they’re out little to no money (by QB standards).

If not, he’s a steal.

And even if he’s barely above average, he’s at least a good standby or backup for whatever competition they bring in. At a low cost. Nearly half the backup QBs in the league made more than Newton last season.

Not every team can have a Mahomes. And even those that have them have to do some magic to keep their cap numbers manageable. Running a team isn’t as simple as “get best QB available no matter the cost”. It’s “get best QB we can afford and be willing to take some gambles if they don’t cost us much”.

$14 million for the one year deal, so it appears they’re planning on him being the starter:

Wow. Not understanding that move at all.

Here’s a (probably paywalled) Boston Globe article that says $5 mil base salary, and up to $14 mil total with a bunch of incentives, including “Pro Bowl, All-Pro, MVP, the playoffs, and Super Bowl MVP”. So not quite as crazy, but still a terrible move IMHO.

Well, it’s Friday and no Bears trade for Russell Wilson. Although now Colin Cowherd jumped on the “let’s start some rumors” bandwagon.

The Bears are in an interesting place, with a Super Bowl worthy (and quite expensive) defense, but big questions at QB and O line. However, they don’t have a lot of draft capitol (they don’t pick until 20th) and are up against the salary cap. But they also have a GM who isn’t afraid to throw draft picks at a problem and a GM and coach who may be on hot seats. They are very much in the win now phase.

So while the Bears have no problem mortgaging the future, I just don’t see them having enough capitol to entice the Seahawks or Texans. But I’m constantly surprised by the NFL, so there is that.

Seattle has one of the best QBs in the NFL (last year he was the best overall to start then turned mediocre halfway through the year, I still don’t get that). That’s the most important asset to have. I can’t see him traded unless they can get a comparable QB in return. I don’t see any trade situation where that would happen.

A full $14M (not likely to be achieved) would have put him as the 22nd highest paid QB last year.

So, no, that doesn’t indicate it’s a real commitment to starting him. That’s still a below market “prove it” one year contract.

A $20M one year contract. That’s about average and not a great idea. But this one is still totally defensible.

Again, offering a below market contract to a questionable player is not a “terrible” idea.

I watched most of the Pats games this year, and Newton was, at best, incompetent. I’m amazed they’re bringing him back, even for free.

I’d also think Cam would be useless as a veteran presence in the locker room or on the sideline as a backup. Definitely doesn’t strike me as that type
