Jon Zazula died at 69. Interesting guy. He had a record store in the Route 18 Flea Market in Old Bridge NJ. He decided to start a record label from the store. It started when they received a cassette from an unsigned band called Metallica. Megaforce Records also signed acts like Anthrax, Ministry and Kings X.
He was skateboarder/youtuber for those who don’t know who he is (FWIW I do think he meets the SDMB “celebrity” definition, he was just someone I was unfamiliar with)
This one hits hard. I’ve known Doug professionally for decades and been to his office/studio/compound in western Massachusetts several times. Having recently moved to the Boston area, I was expecting I might go out and see him again sometime. I had no idea he was so ill, but the last time I saw him was more than two years ago.
Although the word “visionary” is highly overused, there is no better description for Trumbull, who was still working on innovative technologies involving high frame rate, virtual sets, real-time composting, etc., as of the last time I was in touch, about a year ago.
And he was a great guy; modest and unassuming in all my dealings with him.
Here’s a picture I took in his office on my last visit, in July 2019. He’s in the background; if you’ve seen his movie Brainstorm, you might remember the high-tech helmet that was featured in the film.
This one really sucks. Although never a star, Gerald Williams was a great role player and great on defense. A good teammate and good person. Cancer sucks.
I shouldn’t have read that article. Now I have the song “Head Games” as an earworm, but since this is the Straight Dope board, it’s been replaced with “Thread Games”.
