2023 Oscars

Do we not have a thread for this? That’s weird.

“Everything Everywhere All At Once” is an enormous, crushing favorite to win Best Picture. It’s the most lopsided betting odds I have ever seen for that cetegory.

While I don’t doubt that’s true, I hated the film and stopped watching it after about an hour. It wasn’t interesting, didn’t make any sense, and I didn’t care about the characters. Three red flags for any film I’m watching. I liked The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fablemans much more, so I hope one of those two wins, but I wouldn’t count on it.

You made it 1/2 hour longer than we did. My wife wants to watch tonight. Not sure if I will also.

Hated HATED Banshees. Think Tar the only other nominated film I saw. Oh yeah - part of Elvis on a plane before I turned it off. Which apparently leaves Top Gun as my choice. Yuck!

This is the first year in a while where my #1 favorite film of the year is actually the front runner to win! Loved EEAAO so much, thought it was one of the most unique films I’ve seen in a long time.

There are a few films from last year that I enjoyed more (like Triangle of Sadness) but I’m rooting for EEAAO because it’s just so unique and has the potential to radically influence cinematic narrative, much like Pulp Fiction did 30 years ago.

It’s probably what the awards should be about. Right up there with 8 1/2. Unique movies I like but do not understand.

It’s funny, there’s a movie called Take This Waltz (2011) that stars Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen, as a married couple, with Michelle Williams having feelings for somebody else.

The writer and director of the film was Sarah Polley.

I don’t have cable TV. Is there an easy and free way to stream this? The Super Bowl is always available even without a TV plan. Hoping this is, too.

All the odds here.

EEAAO is seen as a shoo-in for 3 and odds-on for 2 more.

Best Pic - 1/10
Best Actress - 24/23
Best Director - 1/14
Best Editing -2/5
Best Orig Screenplay - 4/6
Best Supporting Actor - 1/50 (!)

I’m another who just found it annoying and didn’t make it past a half hour. I liked Banshees as an allegory for the Irish civil war, and I really like the actors. I can’t believe that Top(m) Gun even received a nomination, being basically a remake of the first one.

Lastly, I don’t care at all about awards telecasts and never watch them.

It’s a technically incredible movie, pulled off with a great deal of skill. It LOOKS amazing. To the members of the Academy that counts for something. That’s their craft.

Okay, but there’s an award for that category.

Per the question in the OP, there’s been a thread on the nominees since January.

It’s on ABC.

I meant to get my act together and watch as many of these as I could before the award ceremony. I guess now I know what I’m doing this afternoon.

EEAAO definitely wins these six.

Fraser definitely wins Best Actor even though the movie is shit and Aronofsky is a hack fraud.

I posted my review for each best picture nominee over in the running movie thread, but here is my summary of my take on all of them, grouped into the good, the mediocre, and the ugly, and in ranked order:

Women Talking
Banshees of Inisherin
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
Triangle of Sadness

The Fabelmans
All Quiet on the Western Front/Elvis in a tie

TAR
Avatar 2
Top Gun: Maverick

My main award hope is for RRR to win the best song and for the performance from the two guys to be incredible. I saw that both leads are in town to perform tonight and man, it should be a heck of a performance.

Oh, I don’t think the movie was too bad. It was certainly not incredible. I’ll go further and say I think Fraser, who we all love, was only OK in the role. It is an OK movie and his performance is OK as well. Good, possibly, but not amazing.

Michelle Yeoh in Everything, though, was amazing. I hope she wins.

I thought Top Gun Maverick was well made, but honestly really lame.
