2023 SDMB Celebrity Death Pool

I wasn’t complaining. I had tickets to Game 7, which would only happen if KC won Game 6. So I got to see my first Series game the next night, which was an 11-0 Royals blowout.

I remember game 6 partly because the National Anthem was sung by the Oak Ridge Boys. Now, my dad’s pet peeve, and my own, was singers that do the anthem “their own way” When the ORB came out(I knew nothing about them) I looked and was dreading what I thought it would be like. But I was so wrong, they used the normal tempo, and sang it in lovely four part harmony. My dad almost became a fan.

I also remember, not sure what year, when Toni Tenille sang the anthem. Oh great, I thought, another pop rendition. But no, she said “won’t you all please join me in singing our national anthem?” and then just sang it straight. I should learn not to judge.

Back when Whitney Houston sang the Star Spangled Banner before the 1991 Super Bowl, my brother made a similar comment, saying she was going to ruin the anthem. When she finished, he had tears running down his face. He still says they should just play a video of her singing the national anthem before every Super Bowl game.

Let’s not mention Roseanne Barr. My dad was not an activist, but he said it would have been worth getting arrested it he could have run onto the field and taken the microphone and said “Now let’s do it right.” I told him I would have run interference for him to slow down security.

I don’t mind if the national anthem is sung in an artist’s “own way,” as long as that artist is Marvin Gaye and it’s done exactly as it was done at the 1983 NBA All-Star game.

Legendary Poker Player Doyle Brunson has seen his last River Age 89.

Cashed in his chips, huh?

Folded.

“Pot’s light, who didn’t ante? Doyle, you in? Doyle? Doyle?”

I had Doyle Brunson!

I’m not fond of the “has died after a battle with” formulation in general, but in this particular instance, “has died after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease” - jeez. There IS no way to ‘battle’ it as of yet, and when there is, it’ll be a terrific medical breakthrough.

According to this article he called the Grim Reapers bluff several times, before the Grim Reaper had an unbeatable hand yesterday.

1…2…3

Nobody had him this year, but I remember when I had to remind folks to distinguish between him and the other Billy Graham.

Ah, the “Brian Cox” scenario.
