Dick Clark died.
(The other one.)
Is Carter the oldest ever former President?
Yes. Bush, Ford, Reagan, John Adams and Hoover were over 90 years old. The closest to Carter is Bush who died at 94.
It is especially extraordinary that Adams lived to 91, I can always remember his age because in the movie musical 1776 his age is mentioned as 41, and we all know that trivia that he lived exactly fifty years after that.
Adams didn’t quite make it to 91. He was born on October 30, 1735, and of course died on July 4, 1826.
Not being familiar with the musical 1776, I don’t know what time period it covered. Perhaps part of it took place late in the year?
ETA: What’s impressive is that Adams was the longest-lived President for nearly two centuries, from 1803 (when he’d lived longer than Washington) to 2001 (when Reagan lived longer than Adams).
It kind of blows my mind that Herbert Hoover outlived John F. Kennedy.
The show covers the debate over independence, and ends with the signing. Even though it was adopted on July 2 it’s depicted on the 4th. There is a lot of humor and one item I like is when a newly arrived member of the continental Congress approaches Franklin to let him know that his son, the Royal Governor, has been arrested, :“How is the little bastard?” is the reply. Or when Martha Jefferson arrives to see her husband and they go into a clinch. Franklin and Adams leave and Adams, depicted as a bit of a prig, thinks that now Jefferson can finish the declaration. Franklin tells him he doesn’t think he;ll get to it right away and Adams exclaims “You don’t mean they’re going to…in the middle of the afternoon?” “Not everybody’s from Boston John. The history books will clean it up”
Terry Kirkman, founder of the 60’s group The Association, dead at 83.
And then along went Terry.
The exact same day Thomas Jefferson died too. Weird, that.
JFK has only missed one Detroit Lion playoff win.
Never heard The Association described as a ‘folk-rock’ band before. They were for the most part a pop band with a string of top-40 hits like “Cherish,” “Windy,” “Never My Love,” and “Along Comes Mary.” There are some hints of folk-rock in some of the deep tracks of their albums, but even there it’s an occasional thing.
Although 1776 is one my favorite musicals a history lesson it is not. The Lee resolution for independence was passed on July 2nd 12 - 0 with New York abstaining (courteously). The details of the declaration, the main part of the show, were actually hammered out between the 2nd and the 4th when it was ratified and announced. A copy of the declaration, signed by Hancock and Charles Thompson, the secretary of the Contental Congress, was sent to George III. The engrossed copy, the one everyone is familiar with, was primarily signed on August 2nd although some delegates did not trickle in until as late as September.
Legend has it that Adams’ last words were, “At least Jefferson still lives.”
Oh I know it is not a history lesson but the feel of it is still good. In grade school I thought of all those grave and valiant forefathers working for our independence, but I can’t imagine now all the quarreling and self interest that must have gone on. And I do love the show, particulary William Daniels as Adams, with his duets with his wife. Some of that was taken from their letters.
Blew Kennedy’s mind, too.
And the record belonged to Reagan for about 4 years, when Ford passed him up about 2 months before he checked out.
David McCallum is no more.
ALIVE, but Sophia Loren suffers injuries.
GuanoLad and kitap get points for McCallum.
