2024 SDMB Celebrity Death Pool

Physicist Peter Higgs, 94yo.

Musician Chris Cross is gone…

The British bassist of the UK band Ultravox, not the American soft rock crooner.

Nor the two-fer teen R&B kids who wore their pants backwards.

If you’re an old basketball fan like I am you know the name “Elvin” from THE BIG E Elvin Hayes.

Oh the trip was wonderful. My sister, BIL, and I were in Terra Haute for it. There is a winery called Sycamore Winery outside of town and the grounds were opened to a large crowd. My cousin and her husband met us there, we were all together in 2017 in Nebraska for totality there. Sunday in Bedford Indiana, where we spent the night, it was cloudy and there was a thunderstorm, but the next morning the skies were almost perfectly clear, so, with fingers crossed, we drove to Terra Haute. There was no more than a high haze with the sun and the eclipse perfectly visible for almost four minutes.

The world can be a small place so I suppose it’s possible there was another Doper there. If so I’m sorry to have missed them. In the morning I watched regional news and saw about many other large gatherings. The Indianapolis Speedway opened, that could have been fun but probably more expensive. Many places charged for parking, the winery we were at didn’t, and since they are also an event venue they even set out chairs, which my sister and I hadn’t thought of. If you are ever in the area of Terra Haute, look up Sycamore Winery.

We started early Sunday morning, as on the way my sister wanted to look at some cemeteries where she was looking for the graves of some ancestors. Springfield cemetery, where Lincoln was interred, was supposed to have a couple of great greats, but in the oldest part, and we couldn’t locate them. It’s kind of sad to see the area, rather unkempt and most of the graves tilted and obviously forgotten. Later we looked around in a cemetery outside of Decatur, and had similar results. The graves would have been in the early to mid 1800’s. I forget now the name of the little town but way out in the country we located a very small place, hardly bigger than a front yard, and sis finally found on grave she was searching for. This place was so sad, it supposedly had even been named for the family of our ancestor, but the rock walls had crumbled and hardly a stone could be read, many tumbled or broken. But my sister finally found a gentleman who would be a four greats grandfather to us. His wife was supposed to be there too but if so her stone was lost. One of their sons, and his wife, is burried here in Topeka, and we kind of keep an eye on their marker, one of the old fashined obelisks. One more place, similarly defunct, sis had no more luck. But at least one out of four was located. At all the places a few flowers were left, the only ones around.

At the Quality Inn where we spent Sunday there were tons of folks heading for totality, I hope they were as lucky as we were. I saw one shirt making reference to being at both 2017 and 2024, I suppose I could still be alive in 2045, but I would be over ninety. And I found out, to my surprise, there will also be an eclipse in 2044, to be seen mostly in Canada but also a little bit of Montana and South Dakota. That one sounds intriguing, as it will mostly be circling the pole, and will occur at sunset.

Now, did anybody get points? I don’t see any claimants.

Sailing…. Take me aw…. never mind

Well, one. Chris Kelly died in 2013.

“Ain’t Got No Home” is a fun song. Thanks for the joy, Mr Henry.

Fantastic writeup Baker, thank you.

A sad day…

Trina Robbins has died at 85.

I had him on my list 7 years ago.

Do many Sumo wrestlers of large size live a long, full life? I think their average life span is quite short.

I reckon dying in your 50’s to 60’s isn’t too rare among the super-obese (ex-)athletes.

This will probably make some headlines, if true:

Well, Cazzle will be happy

I trust TMZ more than a lot of other sources.

It’s on ESPN’s website.
