The Negro Leagues were rapidly becoming irrelevant. The only reason why he got any Negro League stats was because MLB teams had to wait until he graduated high school before signing him. He only played home games with the Black Barons.
Reminds me of the death of Israel Kamakawiwoʻole (Somewhere over the Rainbow). He was huge, would check in/or be checked into the hospital due to weight related problems. His friends literally killed him with kindness by smuggling food into the hospital.
