2024 Summer Olympics Thread

The thing that annoyed me was the way they equate a country with a captal city, for example when as the North Macedonian team went past they were referred to as the “team from Skopje”, and Israel as “the team from Tel Aviv” I am sure not all the team are from those cities. Tel Aviv is neither the larest city or the capital of Isreal, I am not sure whether they said Tel Aviv to try and avoid politics or to make a political statement.
Outside the Isreal the BBC often refers to itself as “BBC London” so using capital cities and countries synonymously so it could just be their attitude of belittling the provinces.

I agree the players deserve sympathy, but the penalty was correct and I will be appalled if it is reversed.

As to the coaches involved, they should be banned for life from any involvement in Canadian national soccer. I will be very disappointed if the punishment by Soccer Canada is any less.

As to fans invading the pitch, I would wholeheartedly agree Morocco should be handed a six point penalty, or worse, if it were found that they had orchestrated it.

Really hard to judge or televise a sport not taking place in a defined setting.

They judge and televise sports that take place on city streets all the time.

But those are on defined routes.

I agree. This dancing was unimpressive in its heyday. However, if I always got my way the Olympics would also be racing Zambonis. Zamboni? Many a zambonus?

Funding is only being withheld by the Canadian government from people who were likely involved. My initial impression was different so I retract my previous statement and offer my apologies.

More info:

OK so we did get a bit of that for the opening ceremony “narrative”.

The people who want to be scandalized will see whatever they claim scandalizes them.

If they weren’t careful, they might have had Iran, Iraq, Israel, and Jordan all on the same boat.

Pity they aren’t in the same group (and same gender) as Canada. One more penalty and we could have had a team going through to the knockout round with fewer than 0 points.

Huh? I’ve always found it mesmerizing and incredibly athletic and beautiful.

A coach is part of the team, and a key one. Good coaching can make the difference between winning and losing.

If the coaches are using a benefit obtained contrary to the Olympic rules and criminal under the law of the host nation, the team as a whole is benefiting from a breach of the rules and a criminal act, even if they don’t know it.

The team as a whole had to lose the benefit it obtained by the improper acts of its coaches.

Not when my buddies tried to do it.

In fairness, it is now more athletic and impressive than it has ever been. I wouldn’t call it a sport (though this distinction is unimportant), but I don’t care that it is in the Olympics. If people like it, good for them.

NBC sucks as always. Thankfully, you can find any sport you want on Peacock. Too much yapping, too little coverage, too much Snoop (not that I don’t like Snoop), endless discussion of a US basketball blowout. The game is done, show other sports.

The coverage is abysmal. There’s no other way to say it.

I DVRd the women’s gym, started at 5am. Watched it.
It replayed, rewatched and it was all cut to pieces.

Biles was injured but hung in

Looks like the record of the Canadian and South African Women’s Doubles Badminton teams of going through to the knock-out rounds with 0 points is safe for a bit longer

I’m watching Women’s Rugby. USA v Japan.

Now I know how they must have felt when Godzilla rampaged through Tokyo.

I was tied up with yard work and missed most of US women’s soccer. Dang. They looked good.

As much as I enjoy watching the Canadian women’s team play, I’m coming around to the idea that they should’ve just been taken out of the tournament, rather than this 6-point penalty. If this is considered a large enough infraction, then just kick them out. This just screws up the tournament. It’s totally different than points deductions in leagues.

It does bring up an interesting scenario where Canada wins out and NZ beats France. The group would be a 4-way tie at 3 points, and Canada would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over everyone.

I think I must have missed something? What last supper reference?

It was at the fashion cat walk.
The big lady was supposed to be Jesus and all the others apostles. They were all in drag.
Two kissed. Like Judas and Jesus, I guess. And there’s a very small person, that must be Peter/Thomas at his right. I can’t tell from pictures how old.

I thought just a ideation/ parody of the painting “The Last Supper” Da Vinci
