Gooooooooooooooooooooal! And the US up 1-0.

Brazil has something like 64% possession though. Must be smoking hot if they are taking cooling breaks.

Possession is more of a style stat than anything.

Surprised by that yellow given the first half. Not convinced it was a foul at all.

10 minutes overtime. For what? This is getting ridiculous.

ETA: ok, I retract that a bit, I forgot the water breaks. But still too much.

Seems too much. Naeher, the American keeper, has done well under some modest challenges. Though a nice save from a header from Brazil forward number nine. Andrianna?

Wow, that was a hard check!

People who think women are all sweetness and light watch little female soccer or rugby.

Or boxing, for that matter.

And game. Really came down to one mistake that the US capitalized on. Well played by both teams.

Or a bar fight.

And then there were none. A hard fought gold medal.

I’ve never witnessed a bar fight between two women, maybe I frequent the wrong bars. But I can imagine that it can be ugly.

I think that the player she could have passed to (Smith? Rodman?) was offside… in fact, I thought there was some chance the goal would be called offside due to the other player pulling some of the goalkeeper’s attention. Never been totally clear on those rules.

Anyhow, great to see the USA back on top of the podium again. And while at some level I feel bad for Marta retiring without a major championship, I’ve never forgiven the Brazilian team for the level of cynical timewasting and dirty play they display, particularly in their epic loss to the USA in the 2011 WWC. Karma, baby.

Great team win for the USA. Some massive saves from Naeher, lots of good defense, and a wonderful goal from Swanson.

During the initial pass yes, not when Swanson could have squared it.

In looking at the replay, Swanson was not beyond the last defender when the pass was struck, but Rodman was. However, a player like Rodman, in this case, commits a foul when that player touches the ball (obviously didn’t happen) or interferes with play (also didn’t happen).

Another astoundingly close finish in the women’s 100m hurdles. Russell of the US wins by .01 seconds over the competitor from France.

Well…

… most of them were.

Regrettably, the inclusion of “Raygun” is what people are talking about. She was horrific, and it’s mystifying as to how she was allowed to compete. She apparently did win an Oceania competition, but it’s a mystery as to how. There have to be a thousand better break dancers in Australia alone.

Given that she is, apparently, some sort of professor of break dancing at MacQuarrie University (really) maybe it was some sort of lifetime achievement award, but it sure didn’t look good.

“Breaking” was already not going to be a part of the LA games in 2028. I suspect we also won’t see it in Brisbane (Australia is lobbying very hard for squash for be included - it’s debuting in Los Angeles - and they try to cap the number of sports.)

Added in LA:

Squash
Obstacle course
Flag football
Lacrosse (was in the Olympics forever ago)
Baseball and softball (in the Olympics in Tokyo, out in Paris, back for likely two more Games)

Ingebrigtsen won the mens 5000m easily pulling away. And Kipyegon did the same for the womens 1500m.

Cricket is back as well, for the first time since 1900, with men and women’s T20 games

26 medals for Canada now as Marco Arop wins silver in the 800m.

Canada did better than the oddsmakers predicted.

USA and New Zealand jumpers tied in the men’s high jump… they could have shared gold, but are going to a jump-off instead. Seems like an insane choice but then, I don’t have the competitive mindset of an Olympian, so what do I know?
