2024 Summer Olympics Thread

Wait another 12 years and she’ll have gold…

Or fail her own drug test.

Actually, the limit for testing the samples is 10 years; the 10-year limit is mentioned in the IOC’s anti-doping rules for the Paris Olympics.

What happened was, the top two finishers in that race had already been disqualified, and the original fourth place finisher (who had moved up to second because of the disqualifications) had apparently failed a test in mid-2012, which would have prevented her from competing in the Olympics that year, but the Russian Ministry for Sport hid this from WADA, and it took until late 2021 for the truth to come out. It is being reported now because her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was denied, so the disqualification is now “official.”

Here are the details of the latest decision.

Still have about 50 recordings to go. Just a parting note…not serious enough to put this in the Pit, more like a resigned sigh.

The quality of NBC’s coverage has varied a lot, of course (if I never hear that nails-on-a-chalkboard female announcer for archery again, it’ll be much too soon), but overall it’s been pretty good. I’m watching equestrian right now, and there’s a tight focus on the action everyone is a professional; couldn’t ask for more. However, one event where I noticed it was bad…consistently, completely, irritatingly bad…was, of all things, beach volleyball. Going off on bizarre tangents, missing critical moments, overexplaining, and of course all the America’s Got Talent-caliber jokes.

But the worst part is that…I don’t know the hell why…for the American women, they insisted on completely random cutaways to the player’s families. Lots…and lots…and lots…and lots of random cutaways. I…I just don’t get this attitude at all, of relentlessly plugging gorgeous ladies wearing next to nothing, and then when the match begins you give them as little screen time as possible. Bad enough when they’re showing involved family members, but these shots invariably include children, who, as anyone who’s ever spent any time with them knows, absolutely do not give a crap.

So imagine my surprise when, in a critical moment in the second set of Koth and Nuss’ quarterfinal match (which would be their last of Paris), out of absolutely nowhere I got treated to a shot of a boy, in plain view on the right of the screen, PICKING HIS NOSE.

Lessee… :astonished::man_facepalming::face_vomiting: Yeah, that should cover it. Folks, this is absolutely inexcusable. There’s a reason things like same-day tape and 6-second delay exist. NBC has more than enough experience with spontaneous grossness through shows like American Ninja Warrior and should be damn well equipped to deal with it. Furthermore, why interrupt a crucial moment near the end of the second set for this? The logical thing to do would be to film a short segment with the ugly disgusting family, edit it, and show it in full prior to the action so we can then spend the match looking at the PLAYERS. I’m not sure yet whether to write to NBC about this, but I’m leaning strongly toward it. I know I’m just one voice in the crowd, but I can’t stay silent about this.

Gods, he was rooting. Rooting.

Also, anyone care to explain how Snoop Dogg is practically a god at that network now? Yeah, I know he did some nice things, but he’s getting Tom Brady levels of hype. It’s wild.

Zero clue. It just kind of happened.

I noticed that, too. I think he must have become public domain recently.

I don’t watch NBC, but did see Olympic coverage. It’s financially very advantageous to him to morph into the nation’s “cool friend” or something. He got paid something like $500,000 per day in France this year.

It’s just that juxtaposition of the Gin & Juice guy doing regular “white folk” type things like covering the Olympics.

I don’t know much about Calvin Broadus, but did he grow up fairly middle-class and educated? I just wonder if he is really from a difficult socioeconomic background or not.

I’ did hear him on YouTube talking bout how Spotify contacted him with a plaque to commemorate millions of song streams. He called his accountant and was informed his grand total take-home from Spotify was…$45,000.

Music is not where the cash is. Touring for sure is.

Snoop hasn’t lost his edge; he was seen consorting with a known felon.

Trump joke? Or someone else?

Possibly a Martha Stewart reference. They had her over in Paris, too.

And of course Martha Stewart was working closely with Snoop Dogg, including a segment in which they explained dressage. I think Snoop Dogg was representing the “average” person for whom dressage is out of their known experience.

Oh, right. Yeah, I think the two of them becoming friends was the start of people seeing Snoop as quite different than they did early in his career.

I hope he’s a good guy in reality. I don’t want a “Bill Cosby” type moment where were learn terrible things.

The real surprise will come when we learn that Martha Stewart is in reality the head of a Westchester County crime family.

Well, he’s already a convicted felon on drug (not just marijuana but also cocaine) and gun possession related charges. He was also a member of a gang as a teenager and been accused of sexual assault on more than one occasion.

He’s not exactly squeaky clean to begin with. It’s true that he does appear to be mellowing with age, but other than a previously unrevealed serial killing spree, I’m not sure it would be surprising if any revelations of other past misdeeds came to light.

He was an actual pimp. In terms of things in your past that would get you canceled in today’s world, you would think pimp would be right at the top of the list.

And not a particularly progressive one, either. If you believe his lyrics, he very much believed in old skool pimpin’.

I must have missed that one. I saw the segment where Snoop and Stewart went to a French restaurant and he pretended to eat escargot, but threw it on the floor.

It’s a far cry from pimping, of course, but he still sounds like a jerk.

Canadian Soccer Association has now fired former head coach Bev Priestman and two assistant coaches, following an internal investigation.

Others appear to be under investigation as well.
