Yeah, there used to be T-shirts with the Duck, Beaver and Cougar mascots high-fiving each other that said “Coalition for a Husky Free Northwest”.
You’re not wrong. What’s changed, for Oregon, is that in the last 30 years or so, the school – and the athletic program, in particular – has received a tremendous amount of support from Phil Knight (co-founder of Nike and an Oregon alum) and Nike.
Thus ruining the game forever, in my opinion. Unless you happen to be blind, and just listen to the play-by-play.
True, although Knight gives just as much to Stanford, and they haven’t built sustained success.
As I think Gatopescado is alluding to, another major factor in our success was realizing that it doesn’t matter what the alumni or the media think of our uniforms, but it matters a great deal what 17 year old football players think of them. Embrace the neon.
I have to say, at least the Ducks uniforms are rarely boring.
Sometimes I think they look awesome, and sometimes they are hideous to the point where if I were a player, I’d be embarrassed by them.
Personally, I am always happiest when they go with the bright yellow UO helmets, Kelly green jersey with the Duck on the sleeve (or as we used to call that one, “our uniform”). But if mirrored helmets and jerseys visible from space are the price of winning, so be it.
So, I think Indiana is going to win the title, and I’m perfectly OK with that.
Does anyone here want to dispute either part of that?
(Another ridiculously entitled Duck fan take I’ve heard is that we should root for Miami, because it’s “our turn” to be the next team to win its first title ![]()
First, while Knight does give to Stanford, I’m not convinced that he gives nearly “as much” as he does to Oregon (and, specifically, to their football program). So, cite?
I suspect that Stanford has higher academic requirements for admission, even for football players; if so, that may play a role, too.
Oh no, I’m totally rooting for Indiana. What an amazing story, an incredible turnaround for a team that has been awful for generations that might win the championship just two years out from mediocrity.
Cursory googling reveals that you are correct. Knight’s donations to Oregon are both larger overall and are known to have been, at least in part, directed toward the athletic department. Stanford, as a private institution, doesn’t have to tell anyone what it did with the money, but at least a large chunk of it is known to have funded academic departments. The admission requirements point is also valid, of course.
You can say that about most NLF teams these days. The Seahawks had those god awful lime green pajamas they called “color crush.”
I love them though. They’re ugly but I seriously think they blind the opponent. Their win record was initially 7-0 with them, though I think they’ve lost one or two games in them since.
That would be “Action Green.” When we bought our house, the entire first floor was painted that color. We think that’s why it was on the market long enough for us to grab it.
That is the shade of green; it’s also the shade of green in all of the modern Seahawks uniforms and logos, such as the eye of their mascot logo.
When those uniforms were introduced, they were branded as “Color Rush”. I think every team had their own version. There was a game between the Rams (yellow uniforms) and Buccaneers (red uniforms) nicknamed the “Condiment Bowl” (since they looked like ketchup battling mustard on the field).
And memes were born.
But yeah, point is made that the Ducks aren’t unique in fielding some questionable uniforms in football.
The Steelers have some hideous throwback uniforms with horizontal stripes that make them look like bumblebees.
The game starts in about an hour, and I have a number of friends who went down to Miami to try to get tickets (I live in Indy, so plenty of IU fans here).
Ticket prices for these big games tend to really drop the day of the game for whatever reason. But they’ve increased all weekend, and held extremely steady all day. I suspect this is for a number of reasons:
-
The game is in Miami, with plenty of local fans who haven’t spent a dime on hotels or airfare.
-
The number of IU fans in Miami without tickets is likely pretty high - they have an enormous alumni population, it’s a long weekend, and if they don’t get a ticket, they’re having fun in Miami.
-
The stadium is really far from anything else. As such, everyone who wants to get into the stadium needs to be near the stadium well before game time, and they increasingly feel the crunch of limited supply, limited time, and static demand.
But as my wife said - “if it cost $4000 to attend your funeral, I don’t think I’d pay that much.”
Crap! That orange scumbag is there. Kinda taints the whole thing now. Hope it gets Booed!
Ugh, really? Did he try to give a speech again?
No. Just appeared on the screen during the Anthem. I probably shouldn’t posted politic crap here. My Bad.
If Indiana wins the title and Trump steals the trophy, I’m going to be pissed.
A HUGE blocked punt for a TD. Indiana with a 10 point lead in the 3rd quarter.
